NYC 2013: Levain Bakery

Sunday was my last day in NYC. My flight was at 2pm so I didn't have time to do much before I had to head to the airport. But there was one more stop I needed to make. I was debating on sleeping in or waking up early and making the trip out... But my friend I was staying with told me I HAD to go!!!

So I woke up early Sunday, got all ready and packed and took my luggage with me to my final stop. Levain Bakery in the Upper West Side. I was staying in Queens, which was pretty close to the airport, so the bakery would be going into the city in the opposite direction.

Levain Bakery - Upper West Side
167 West 74th St
New York, NY, 10023
(212) 874-6080

Price: $

The commute actually wasn't so bad. Plus I got to meet up with a friend of mine one more time before I left. I got to the bakery and realized it was tiny. I guess living in Dallas makes me think of a bakery like a cafe where you can sit and chill and stuff. This place was smallll. It had a few stools inside but for the most part I saw people sitting on the steps and curbs outside.

We got lucky when we arrived because the rush of people had dispersed. So we actually got to sit inside! The place smelled amazing and it made me drool just seeing their baked goods on display.

My friend had never been there. She got a Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie (semi sweet chocolate chips and chunks of walnuts) $4~ (and a cup of milk!)

This was their signature cookie. They don't make one without walnuts... I wonder why? But each of their cookies are like 6 ounces. Freaking massive!! And SO INCREDIBLE! One of the best cookies I've ever had in my life. The cookie must've been almost 2 inches thick. The inside was warm and soft with melty chocolate chips. But the outside was the perfect crust. That slight crunch without being too hard or burnt. I really wonder how they get that thickness without either burning the outside or underbaking the inside...

I was getting a bunch of stuff to take back to Dallas with me.

Plus I got the Oatmeal Raisin Scone $3~ to eat there.

My friend that I stayed with said I must try their scones. It was yummy. I love scones. This wasn't like your typical dense scones. It had the nice crunchy outside but fluffy on the inside... almost like a biscuit? It wasn't too sweet and paired great with my hot tea. I totally loved it.

I also got one of each cookie:
Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie (semi sweet chocolate chips and chunks of walnuts) $4~
Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie (dark chocolate cocoa and semi sweet chips) $4~ Super chocolatey. Sooo rich and decadent. I ate 1/5th of it on the plane and it was plenty! Can you imagine eating a whole cookie in one sitting? Heaven! And then sugar coma! haha

Oatmeal Raisin Cookie $4~ Love love loved this as well. So many plump raisins inside!
Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip Cookies $4~ Amazing! So much pb chips throughout.

Like I said, each cookie is like 6 oz. and massive!! But all of them had the perfect crisp exterior and soft centers. I'd really like to know how they achieve that. And the cookies last for quite a while. Even days after, I'd warm up a piece in the microwave and it would taste like it just came freshly out of the oven. Loves it! I've decided that these are the BEST cookies I've ever had in my life. No joke!! And totally worth every penny.

Cinnamon Brioche $3.50~ The brioche was soft and delicious. I wished they put more cinnamon spread inside tho. The ratio of cinnamon to bread was a little bit lacking.

Blueberry Muffin (with fresh blueberries) $3~ This was chock full of plump blueberries. Yummmmmmm!

I'm so glad my friend INSISTED for me to go to Levain Bakery. It was definitely worth waking up early and commuting across town for!! haha. But I'm also glad that it's not anywhere close to me on a daily basis because I'd just be like 400 lbs! XP

Great way to end my awesome trip to NYC. The best weather I've every experienced there, all the awesome people I got to hang out with, plus all the fantastic food!!!

Caffe Bene

Finally got around to checking out the new Caffe Bene over by H-Mart in Carrollton. I was pretty excited when it opened. I actually went to one of the Caffe Bene's in Korea

Caffe Bene
1016 W Trinity Mills Rd.
Carrollton, TX 75006
(212) 586-2010
http://caffebene.com/caffe_bene/
Price: $

Walking in, it was like going into one in Korea... the decor is very consistent with what I saw in Seoul. And I really like their decor...wood furniture, mocha/brown color scheme. It's very cozy and warm. They had a display case by the register with all their waffles and honey toast options. Looks so good! You order at the counter and they give you a buzzer. When the buzzer goes off you go pick up your order at the counter.

I love Asian thick toast desserts so I got a Banana & Walnut Honey Bread $7.45~
It was one of their new offerings. Kinda pricey! But it was huge! Very impressive and yummy looking. The bread had a nice crusty outside and soft on the inside. The bananas and walnuts were great on top. The only thing I wanted was more of that caramel drizzle on top. It was surprisingly not too sweet. I actually still prefer the thick toasts at Taiwanese cafes (the ones with peanut butter or other types of spreads on top) better, but this was pretty good too.

I also got the Misugaru Latte (Homemade Multigrain drink: black sesame seed, black bean, black rice, brown rice, barley) 12oz. $3.95~
I've heard about this drink and it sounded really interesting. I loved it! Never had anything like this... It was creamy and frothy and earthy with all the types of rice and grains and seeds. It's hard to describe the flavor but you can definitely taste the black sesame which I love. I would totally get this again. I got a hot latte this time but next time I might try the frappe version or something! :)

It's a cool place to hang out and chill with friends. I'll have to try one of their waffles next time too.

The Cakepad

A friend of mine recently started his own cake business!! :) And he gave me some samples!! YAYYY!

The Cakepad
(214) 450-6226
http://www.thecakepad.com/
Price: $$$

Right now it's only available for pick up. He might start delivering in the near future. He offers 3 flavors so far on the website but is working on 2 other flavors which I also got to sample. He doesn't skimp on quality ingredients so you should all know you are getting a good quality homemade cake! :)

I can't believe how much cake he gave me to sample! I love me some free samples. hehe. :P I had to take it to a party so other people can help me eat it!

**I'm not sure how big each cake is since I got samples, but I'm estimating it's at least 9-10 inches in diameter, and all double layered.**

Classic Red Velvet Cake (with cream cheese icing) $30~ This is a 2 layer red velvet cake with cream cheese filling and frosting. The red is so rich and vibrant! It's really pretty to look at especially with the contrasting whiteness of the frosting. The cake flavor is your typical red velvet cake but the frosting was very cream cheesy. Now, I actually liked that it wasn't too sweet and the cream cheese flavor sort of brought a savory element into it all. Some people did not like that though. I guess because it's not really your typical cream cheese frosting. The cake was good... fluffy...I felt it could be a little more moist. I'm super picky about cake moistness though. Everyone else enjoyed it.

Triple Chocolate Cake (with a chocolate ganache filling, topped with chocolate mousse) $30~ OMG! This looked sooo good. But I was a little torn on this. I LOVEEEEED the ganache and mousse topping. I can eat buckets of the mousse! The only thing was the cake was too flaky and didn't hold up to the mousse and ganache. It was difficult to cut through the cake without it falling apart. I think maybe if the ganache layer was slightly thinner or maybe put a layer of the mousse in the middle as well would help gel it together more. However, the flavor of the entire cake was fantastic. Super chocolatey, but it wasn't super sweet. If you love chocolate this is definitely for you!

Green Tea Coconut Cake (with green tea whipped cream frosting and flaked coconut) $30~ This was the one I was really eager to try...except the coconut. I absolutely cannot stand eating coconut flakes...it's all because of the texture. I can't stand it at all. :( I mean I love coconut milk in curry and desserts and stuff...just not the flakes. But despite that, I really wanted to try the green tea. He told me that the green tea powder he uses is high quality, straight from Japan. It's a little stronger so you can actually taste the green tea flavor in the cake. So I tried it first with the coconut flakes. I can't do it...just can't... ended up scraping most of the flakes off the frosting. But without it, I really liked it. You can definitely taste the green tea, but it wasn't so strong that it becomes bitter. The green tea frosting was my favorite part. I wish there was a little bit thicker layer of frosting in the middle though, cuz it's sooo yummy! A lot of my other friends that tried it really liked it. Most of them like coconut so they enjoyed the cake as a whole.

Classic Carrot Cake (with walnuts, pecans, carrots, and cream cheese icing). This one isn't available for purchase just yet. I normally don't like carrot cakes because I really dislike carrots. I know, I know...you can't really taste them, but it's more of a memory it brings back more than anything. But I've been trying to be more open minded and I can actually tolerate carrots in certain things now...sort of...haha. To my surprise, I really enjoyed the cake! There's just the right amount of walnuts inside the cake and pecans outside the cake for texture. The cake is light and fluffy and the cream cheese is the same as the red velvet. Not slapped on too thick and not too sweet. I would definitely eat this again.

Pineapple Banana Custard Cake (yellow cake with custard, pineapple, banana filling; topped with toasted coconut flakes). This one is also not available for purchase yet. This was surprisingly my favorite out of the bunch (since I'm such a chocoholic). :P The cake was SUPER moist, I think partially because of the custard, which was creamy and smooth. You can see the slices of fresh bananas in the cake but it was a nice surprise when I got a bite of cake/custard with actual pineapple chunks in it. YUM! The bits of pineapple added texture to the soft cake and custard. I still didn't like the toasted coconut on top, but I was able to scrape it off. The flavors were light and bright and all complimented each other very well. You get a hint of banana and bits of pineapple in every bite. What a great combination! :)

I hope he experiments more on other flavors of cakes. I definitely have some ideas and suggestions! hehe.

Right now you can find his cakes on the menus at Thai-rrific on Forest and Webb Chapel in Dallas. You can also order a whole cake and pick it up there. If you are looking for a nice homemade cake with quality ingredients for your next event, definitely check out The Cakepad!!

BIG. FAT. (DELICIOUS). DONUTS.

I went to Austin this past weekend for my friend's bachelorette weekend. We went to Gourdough's for some late night snack.

Gourdough's
1219 South Lamar Blvd
Austin, TX 78704
(512) 607-6568
www.gourdoughs.com
Price: $

I had already looked at their website and I was excited and scared at the same time...haha. They looked absolutely SINFUL! Gourdough's works out of a trailer. It's in a lot with a few other trailers that sell other kinds of foods. The donuts are quite expensive but are pretty huge and decadent....there are sweet AND savory! They fry and make the donuts to order, so be prepared to wait at least 10-15 minutes or even more if they are busy.

We had 10 girls, but we only decided to get 3 since we were already so full and they are pretty big.

From left to right...we got: Flying Pig (bacon with maple syrup icing) $5.25~Black Out (brownie batter, fudge icing, chocolate covered brownie bites) $4.25~ Sailor Jerry (think rum cake covered with walnuts) $4.25~ Each donut is $4.25 and you have to add $1 if you get the meat ones. Pretty damn pricey....

The Flying Pig was pretty awesome. Lots of bacon, nice and crispy, the donut had a nice crispy shell as well. The sweet from the donut and maple icing with the salty bacon was such an amazing combination. OMG TASTY!!!! :D
Black Out was my favorite. It was AMAZING!!! I couldn't stop making my yummy noise as I ate it...haha. The brownie with the icing and the freshly fried donut.....I was in heaven....CHOCOLATE FRIED GOODNESS heaven!!! It had to be one of the best desserts I've EVER had!

Sailor Jerry was pretty good, but compared with the other two...it was just ok. I wish it had more rum flavor in it. Still very tasty, but its not as special and different as the other two.

I told all my friends that it was amazing, but I CANNOT ever go back....it's too dangerous for me to go back because I will want to eat EVERYTHING. hahaha. But definitely urge everyone to try it at least once and definitely get a savory AND a sweet one. But bring people to share it with! :)
