I got to go to my first ever soccer game this past Saturday at the Toyota Stadium in Frisco. And it just so happens that The Downtown Frisco StrEATS festival was the same day! Woot! So we headed over there in the afternoon to get some food before the game.
This would be my 3rd year going to this food truck festival. Seems like they got the set up pretty much down now. It was basically structured just like last year. There were quite a few trucks there. Most of which I've either tried already or didn't care to try.
There were 1 or 2 that I've never seen before and one was The Guava Tree truck. It is a Cuban American truck. I love Cuban food and wanted to try something new so here I am. Plus they didn't really have a line which was also quite enticing. haha.
They only had 3 choices so I got the Cuban Sandwich (sliced ham, slow roasted pork, swiss cheese, sliced pickles; drizzled with guava mustard on freshly pressed Cuban bread) $9~
It sounded pretty awesome. I have to say I was disappointed when I saw it. The bread was supposed to be pressed! Where was the crispy part on the bread? And for $9 it wasn't very big. It was really tasty though. And the bottom bread was crispy which I really liked. The ingredients had good flavor, although I didn't get any "guava" from the mustard. I would totally get this again, IF it was $3 cheaper. They had these guava and cream cheese filled mini donuts that looked yummy but I resisted because I wanted ice cream. Ha! :P
Overall Experience:
My bf went to the Nammi truck. He got the Rice Bowl (Honey ginger pork, Jasmine rice, red cabbage sautee, cucumbers, pickled daikons and carrots, cilantro) $9~
I've only had their Banh Mi, so the rice bowl was also something new. I really really liked the red cabbage sautee. He loved it. The whole thing was pretty filling and not greasy or heavy. The fresh and pickled veggies added a lot of freshness with the meat and rice. I thought the meat could've been more tender but it was good enough. He liked it over the rice bowls at Ssahm from last year's festival.
Overall Experience:
I mainly wanted ice cream and was disappointed that Coolhaus wasn't there. But no fear! What's Da Scoop was there! And I know their ice cream is good! :)The bad thing about a nice day is that everyone wants ice cream. We spent the majority of our time at the festival standing in line. But I gotta have my ice cream!!!!
He got the Bourbon Street Sundae (Bourbon Cherry Compote, Vanilla Ice Cream, Crushed Graham Cracker & Pecans) $6.50~ He opted for no pecans. It was delicious, but this for $6.50? A bit steep if you ask me. Oh well, how often do we go to one of these food truck festivals. Yum!
I had my eyes set on the Cherry Amaretto Fudge (amaretto ice cream with cherry fudge and black cherries) Single Scoop $3.25~ Plus waffle cone +$1~ (the scoop was bigger than the picture, it was melting so I had to eat some!)
Of course I had to get a cone. That's one of the best parts of having ice cream. The ice cream was amazing. Creamy, smooth, with lots of chocolate fudge swirls and large chunks of juicy cherries. My bf regretted not getting the same flavor. haha. But of course I shared! :P Really really really good, I was craving it again the next day! I hope they have this flavor again next time I see them.
Overall Experience:
I'd say our trip to the festival was a success! With the ice cream being the ultimate winner. Got to try all new things and everything tasted good. If only I can just get more of the cherry amaretto ice cream!!

East Side King - at The Liberty
This was my first Christmas with my bf and I was invited to join him and his family at a lake house in Canyon Lake (an hour south of Austin). We had a ton of fun and food! I'm very glad and grateful that I spent the holidays with such a great group of people. :)
On Christmas Eve Eve, we went into Austin with his 2 sisters and brother in law. We had dinner reservations at Qui, Top Chef Winner Paul Qui's new restaurant. Our reservation wasn't until 8:30PM so we wandered around Austin and decided to get some snacks before dinner. My bf's brother in law recommended this bar called The Liberty. But more importantly, they had the food trailer, East Side King, in the back. I had heard of ESK and even bookmarked it on yelp, but I didn't know there were multiple types of cuisine from each trailer. This location was just a few yards down the street from the restaurant.

This one was the Asian fusion trailer. I also learned that it was a collaboration between Paul Qui and another guy. So we're going double Qui today! :P It was pretty cold outside but we were able to order and wait for our food inside the bar. I wanted to try everything on the menu, but gotta leave some room for dinner!
Poor Qui's Buns (2pcs. - Roasted pork belly in steamed bun, Hoisin sauce, cucumber kimchee, green onion) $7~
I can't resist pork belly. And I thought the name was so smart and playful. "Qui" is pronounced "key", so the name actually sounds like "Porky's buns. Teehee. :P The pork belly was totally tender and the buns were soft and steamed properly. Nommy!
Beet Home Fries (deep-fried roasted beets, Kewpie mayo, Shichimi togarashi, green onion) $7~
I've only had roasted beets one other time and it was pretty bland. This was the complete opposite! Fried to perfection, the outside was crisp and the inside tender. It had lots of flavor and paired so well with the mayo dip. I think this was my bf's favorite. It changed his life. hahaha.
Brussels Sprout Salad (fried Brussels sprouts, sweet and spicy sauce, shredded cabbage, basil, cilantro, mint, onion, jalapeno, deep-fried bun) $7~
I also lurrrrrv brussels sprouts, and these came highly recommended. It was fantastic. The sprouts with the fragrant herbs contrasted by the sweet and spicy sauce. Flavor explosion! I wished there was more brussels sprouts to herb ration though. I feel like there was some fish sauce in there, which added more complexity. The deep fried bun on top was great too. Lots of textures and flavors.
Chicken Buns (2pcs. - deep-fried chicken thigh in steamed buns, Thai flavored spicy mayo, basil, cilantro, mint, onion, jalapeno) $6~
This was delicious. I think it actually beat out the pork belly buns for me. The kicker... the Thai spicy mayo. That stuff was amazing!!
Everything was fantastic, but the restaurant actually texted me that they have a table for us earlier. We had checked in earlier so they said they would let us know if anything opened up. So we got in 30 minutes before our reservation! But that also means we scarfed down our snacks like a pack of hungry wolves. haha. Still tasty. I'd definitely go back next time in Austin. I still have 2/3rds of the menu to try!!! Great recommendation!

ArtOfficial & Food Trucks
I went to an art event downtown yesterday. ArtOfficial at Zouk nightclub featured many local artists, musical artists/DJs, live performers, and food trucks. It was also a charity event with a portion of the proceeds towards local nonprofits: ALS Association, Art Hunger and Dress for Success.
A friend of mine works for the ALS Association and invited me. So I brought a few of my friends to check it out. I have to be honest though, the main draw for me was that they said there will be free food from various food trucks from 5:30-7:30PM for all paid attendees. haha.
One of my friends and I arrived super early... Trying to bypass the after work traffic. But that just means we were first in line for the food trucks. :P Most of the trucks were still setting up so we didn't really get started until about 5:40 or so.
The first truck we hit up was the Dough Boys Pizza Truck.
www.doughboypizzatruck.myshopify.com/
facebook.com/doughboyspizzatruck
twitter.com/PizzaTruckin
We decided on the Margarita (olive oil, fresh mozzarella, fresh tomato and basil).
They are 8" pizzas, freshly baked. It took longer for us to get it because they were just firing up the oven. But it's all good. Worth the wait since the pizza came out piping hot! It was a pretty good size. I would definitely get full if I ate the whole thing. I thought it was a really great pizza. I especially loved the crust. It was not too thin but the outside was super crispy and inside was still soft and slightly chewy. It was a white pizza, so no marinara, which I liked. The toppings were all really fresh too. I would get a pizza from them any day. :) Oh yea, the guys on the truck were super friendly too!

They were only offering one thing during the free food time period. Pulled Pork Sandwich (smoked daily for 14 hours, pork pulled off the bone).
Normally it's topped with red onion, pickles and bbq sauce but for the free samples, it was plain. The service was night and day compared to the pizza truck. We didn't know if they were taking orders because it took awhile for someone to talk to us when we're standing outside the truck. But the sandwich itself was decent. The pork was tender and slightly sweet from the sauce. A slaw topping would've been nice. Not bad, but nothing spectacular either.

This was the other bbq truck. The free samples they were offering was the Pork & Green Chile Hominy (homemade, infused with crispy bacon and chunks of pulled pork and roasted Hatch chiles).
I wanted to try this so yay! It was very good. Hominy is a kind of corn, but it doesn't really look or taste like it... I like it though. And this was really good. The pork was really tender and the flavors and textures with the chile and hominy worked together really well. With a little squirt of hot sauce, it was even better. haha.
By about 7pm, they had apparently ran out of all their free options so my friends bought some food:
Bacon Mac n Cheese (homemade mac & cheese infused with crispy bacon) $3~
Loaded Bacon Mac n Cheese (1/2 pint of Bacon Mac w/ your choice of meat chopped on top) $6~ He got it topped with brisket. $3 extra just for a bit of brisket? We were all expecting the loaded mac to be a bigger size since it's double the price. Oh well. At least it was good. The brisket was finely chopped and added texture to the super rich mac n cheese. I didn't see much bacon inside but it was already rich enough!
Overall:

I got to try more samples. The passion fruit green tea is super refreshing. Especially since yesterday was uber humid. Also tried the Thai Tea again. It was yummy. The sample cups were just too dang small! :P Oh, and I still need to try the boba. I guess next time! :)
Overall:
Campisi's Catering was set up inside the venue. They were serving some sort of Pasta (penne with chicken, artichokes, tomato). I only ate a few bites. It was not good. That little scoop was half grease. XP Eeeeeks.
Overall:
It was a fun event. I hope they made lots of money for the charities. And I got to try a bunch of food. Some great, some not so much. But still a fun experience! :)

What's Da Scoop - Ice Cream Truck
Last Friday we had several food trucks come to my office! That was a nice surprise. Apparently they had signs up in the halls but I never saw them! :P
We could see them pull into the parking lot one by one right outside our window! I got really excited when I saw an ice cream truck, What's Da Scoop! One I haven't seen before. It had giant scoops of ice cream on top of the truck. I really liked that. hehe.
What's Da Scoop

twitter.com/WhatsDaScoopTX
Price: $
I was all trying to be good that day. I had brought my lunch, I was gonna go work out, but that went out the window... XP I really wanted to try the ice cream. While waiting for them to get all set up, I started looking online for their menus. haha. What's Da Scoop was the main one for me since I've had some of the others like Ssahm and Ruthie's. And their flavors all had fun names and sounded delicious!
As soon as they were open for business I headed outside. I didn't want to wait for the lunch crowd to show up.My coworker and I were the first ones to the window. She decided to have dessert first, like me! :P
I really wanted a cone but I held back and decided on 2 Scoops $4.25~
Snap-O-Lantern (spicy pumpkin ice cream with ginger snap pieces) (bottom). It was a pretty bright orange. It had quite a bit of spice to it which I liked. But it overwhelmed the pumpkin flavor a bit. And they definitely need more ginger snap bits in there because when I finally got one, it was awesome!
Kitty Kitty Bang Bang (cheesecake ice cream, raspberry ripplet, oreo pieces) (top). Even though I love pumpkin, I liked Kitty better. You couldn't really taste the cheesecake flavor, but I enjoyed the raspberry swirl and oreo pieces combo. I mean, anything with crushed oreos is good right? :)
The ice cream consistency was pretty good. Not super creamy, but still pretty rich. I liked it. Great on a warm day. Good thing it wasn't too hot that day.
My coworker got one of the Specialty Cones $5~
Pure Satisfaction (vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche, sea salt, chocolate dip).
It was pretty epic. It was pretty much a double scoop and then dipped completely in chocolate. OMG. A bit messy to eat, but the chocolate shell was great. If you've ever had Magic Shell, you can do this at home! :P The ice cream was good. And I can definitely taste the sea salt. But we were wondering where the dulce de leche was. As she made her way into the cone, we discovered that they drizzle the sauce inside the cone. Pretty cool, haven't seen that done before. But the problem is... (well, maybe not a problem for some people) that all the sauce pools at the bottom of the cone for one super sweet bite. Not for me, but I can see a lot of people disagreeing with me here. haha.
It was wayyy too much. It's all I've had all day and I was regretting the double scoops. haha. But I did that to myself. The ice cream was good. It was a hefty size and very affordable. I find most food trucks to be overpriced, so this was a nice surprise. I'd totally get it again the next time I see it. Although I'd probably stick to 1 scoop next time. haha. :P

Bobaddiction - Food Truck
On Monday night I happen to see the new food truck, Bobaddiction, setting up shop in Plano. We were finishing up at Paciugo on Park and Preston and saw them pulling into the parking lot.
I rarely see food trucks in this part of town so my friends and I were very intrigued. We walked over to check it out! Apparently they were called to be a part of the release of Grand Theft Auto at Game Stop. They were just 10 minutes from opening so we stuck around.
Bobaddiction

Price: $
I was able to chat a little with one of the owners, who was super nice, btw. And found out that they've been in operation for less than 3 months. I'd have to say, they have a pretty impressive truck with the LCD menu and the super cute panda on the side.
I love boba. I'm Taiwanese so I grew up drinking this stuff. I would've expected Dallas to have a boba trucker earlier on but oh well, at least we have one now!
Once they opened, we were first in line. And they told us we can sample whatever we wanted. I tried the Classic Milk Tea (black tea, lactose-free milk, rock sugar, longan honey) first. It was pretty good. It's hard to tell from a small sample, but I wish it was a bit stronger in both tea flavor and richness of the milk.
Then they started giving us more samples. I felt bad holding up the other people in line, but I'm not one to pass up samples! :P
Jasmine Milk Tea (green tea, jasmine flowers, lactose-free milk and rock sugar) $4~
I changed my mind to this after I sampled it. It was light, refreshing, and fragrant. The jasmine was very floral but not overwhelming. I got it without boba because I actually planned on drinking this the next day. (After dinner and gelato, I didn't have room to drink this... ) haha. So about 16 hours later, I had it at work as an afternoon treat. It was still delicious! I would definitely get this again. And next time I would try their boba since I didn't get to this time.
My friend got the Passion Fruit Green Tea (green tea, passion extract, fresh fruit puree, rock sugar, longan honey) $4~
This was my original choice because it was really light and refreshing. It wasn't super sweet either. I like that they use fresh fruit puree in all their fruity drinks. She also added rainbow jelly to hers. I think it was an additional 50 cents?
Thai Tea (thai tea, star anise, milk and rock sugar). We also got to sample this. It was pretty good. I wish the sample was bigger though so I can give a better opinion on it.
It was funny because a friend of mine had sent me a picture when he spotted Bobaddiction over the weekend. So it was fresh in my mind, and then we ran into them! Like I said, the guys are super nice and they use good ingredients in their drinks. I also really like the fact that they use lactose-free milk! I'm not lactose intolerant, but this way EVERYONE gets to enjoy milk tea. :)
I'm actually going to see them again tomorrow at the ArtOfficial event downtown! Holla! Follow them on twitter to get their locations.

Food Trucks at Work! :)
This past Friday, some food trucks came to my office! How cool! Even though it was a pretty hot day, I went out and waited in the lines to get some lunch!
I've had some of the other trucks there that day so I wanted to try something new.
Potato Potahto

Baked Sweet Potato (topped with Pecan Smoked Brisket, pickled red onions; plus 2 additional toppings: jalapenos, tomatoes) $6.50~
This thing was MASSIVE!!! I felt like I was holding a small baby or something. hahaha. Well...exaggerating. But it was pretty hefty. The potato was loaded and steaming. The sweet potato was baked perfectly. So soft... I don't know how they cooked it and at what temp but I'd really like to know! The brisket was cooked well. I wish it had a little more seasoning and sauce. Needed a bit more moisture. And they need to dice the onions more finely and have more pickled flavor. But overall it was a good loaded potato. I barely made a dent in it... only ate about a fourth of it. haha. Good bang for the buck!

Before I attempted to dig into my giant potato. I went to Trailercakes. I've actually been following them since before the business started but never came across them until now. I wanted to take something back to the office. I asked them if I could go ahead and order something and pick it up after I eat. They were super nice and said of course.

3 mini cupcakes for $5~
The mini cupcakes are so cute!!
RV (red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting). I loved the frosting on this. The heat outside kinda melted it a little. But it was rich and awesome. The cake was moist and not too sweet. So the sweetness from the frosting paired well.
Cookie Monster (oreo crust, white cake, marshmallow center, oreo buttercream). This was cool with the oreo crust on the bottom. I liked the oreo buttercream too. The marshmallow inside was nice but a little too sweet. I think this would be better as a regular sized cupcake. As a mini, the sweetness overpowered it all. Sure was cute though!
PB&J (white cake, grape jelly, peanut butter frosting). I love PB&J. I liked the layer of jelly under the frosting. The pb frosting was rich and creamy. The flavors were nice but I thought the frosting overpowered the cake.
Overall I thought it was pretty good. Cute and clean presentation. Pretty good flavors. I'd like to try their normal sized cupcakes.
