I went back to Battuto last weekend with
another friend. She said it was on her list to
try so I said I'd totally join her!
We went on a Friday night and this time the
place was packed! It's good to see that
business is going well. :) We were seated
immediately and our waiter was very welcoming
when he greeted us.

I already knew what I wanted going in. I
wanted to try their Chilled Pea Soup. Now, I'm
normally not a cold soup person, but it's hot
and I recently watched an episode of Master
Chef where Graham Elliot made the most
beautiful pea soup. haha. So it's been on my
mind ever since. :P
I chose the pea soup and also the Caesar Salad
$6~ I was then informed by our waiter that the
pea soup was not available that night.
Boooo... I'm so sad. :( So I asked him if I
could do the Half Sandwich and Soup $13~ but
sub the soup for the Caesar. He had to check
with the kitchen and they said yes. I chose
half of the Veggie Panini (roasted zucchini,
squash and red peppers with fontina and pesto
on grilled Tuscan bread).
For a half sandwich
I thought the portion size was very good. It
was nicely pressed with the ridges on top and
golden. I loved it. The flavors of all the
veggies with the fontina were surprisingly
bold. I did not miss not having meat! The
bread was great too. I believe they salted the bread which made a huge
difference. Very tasty. I'd order it again.
The waiter told me that the Caesar dressing
was made from scratch, with the egg yolk and
anchovies and all that. Awesome. Fresh Caesar
dressing is nothing like the stuff from the
bottle. Even though I like both. hehe. I asked
for it to be lightly dressed but it was still
a bit too much for me. I found it too salty.
But other than that the veggies were fresh. It
was a big portion too.
My friend got the Spaghetti and Meatballs
(house blend of beef and veal meatballs on
spaghetti) $12~
The spaghetti came with 4
pretty large meatballs. The meatball flavors
were good, not too many fillers so they were
very hearty. The pasta was cooked great. Al
dente! Had great texture. And the marinara
wasn't too sour, which I hate in some place.
Oh.. and it wasn't too saucy, which I like. I
prefer less sauce because I like the flavors
of the pasta. :)
It was a good meal. My friend seemed to enjoy
it. Our waiter was nice but had to check on
everything when I'd ask him a question...
Maybe he's fairly new? Dunno. At least he was
friendly and pretty attentive. Also, I saw
Gene Gates, the owner, and he remembered me!
:) We chatted for a little bit. Super nice
guy! I hope business continues to grow for
them. And I still need to go back and try the
pea soup! hahaha.

Meddlesome Moth
Wow... it's already been 2 weeks since I
was in Vegas. This month is flying by!
And almost Christmas!! :)
Last week I went with some friends to Meddlesome Moth (in the Design District). They had recently changed chefs...now currently the chef that used to be at Screen Door (which closed). Thought we'd go and check it out!
Meddlesome Moth
1621 Oak Lawn Ave.
Dallas, TX 75207
(214) 628-7900
http://www.mothinthe.net/
Price: $$
We had to sit outside since there was a long wait inside. Luckily it wasn't too cold out... Their patio seating is quite nice.
We got several dishes to share.
Pig and Fig (pork belly, blue cheese grits and bbq fig) $12~
This sounded so good. But if you are not a fan of blue cheese, this is not for you. I can tolerate blue cheese and it was still a little stinky for me. haha. But the pork belly was fried nicely and fatty. The combination of the blue cheese grits and fig was a bit strange. Personally I wouldn't get this again, but if you love blue cheese and fatty pork, this is the dish for you!
Nueske's Bacon Lollipops (with funnel cake and maple hollandaise) $12~
This was totally yummy. For those who like the sweet and savory combo. The pork belly almost had an Chinese roast pork flavor. YUM! The funnel cake was a bit too crispy but the hollandaise was amazing! Sweet from the maple and paired so well with the funnel cake.
Zucchini Chips (Mediterranean sea salt) $8~
A waiter walked by with this as we were ordering. It smelled so good so we got one too. It was disappointing. The slices of zucchini were so thin that it just felt like we were eating grease. It disintegrated in my mouth as soon as I put it in there and just felt greasy. :(
Toasted Mushroom Farro (with Grana Padano) $10~
I really wanted to try this. I've seen Giada make farro a lot on Food Network but I've never had it. I liked it a lot. It's kind of like a fat brown rice. It's all about the texture and I'm all about that!
Chocolate Pecan Pie.
My friend ordered this. I think they change their desserts daily so they didn't have a dessert menu. There was a thick layer of chocolate under the top crust. It was super yummy. I'm not a fan of Pecan pie, but if it's Chocolate pecan pie, that's another story! :P
It wasn't as great as my first dining experience at Meddlesome Moth. But we also ordered completely different things. So I don't know... might just be hit or miss.

Chicago: Day 2 - Revolution Brewing
Later on Sunday, after some more sightseeing, we stopped by Revolution Brewing to get some snacks and watch the football game. My friends really recommended this place. They said they brewed their own beers and the food was good as well.
Revolution Brewing

For some reason I had pictured a dingy hole-in-the-wall. But it was definitely not. haha. It was actually a pretty big place. It was clean and open and I liked some of the accents of their decor.
The guys ordered some beers and we looked over the menu. I was pretty full still so we just got a few things to munch on.
My friend had to order the Bacon Fat Popcorn (bacon, crispy sage and shaved parmesan) $4~
It was pretty good! I thought it was just going to be popcorn with bacon flavor but it actually had large pieces of bacon in there as well. The bacon flavor on the popcorn was subtle, but you can definitely taste it. Yum!
Crispy Calamari (brussel sprout leaves, almond, romesco sauce, parmesan, arugula) $9~
It was kind of a small plate but I liked the presentation with the greens. It added a nice contrasting color. The flavors were really good and I liked the addition of brussel sprouts, arugula and almonds. It was a different take on your normal calamari appetizer.
I chose the Pecan Tart with Zucchini Bread Ice Cream (warm pecan tart, zucchini bread ice cream, Eugene hot fudge) $7~
I don't normally like pecans but it was the ice cream that really captured my interest. Zucchini bread flavored ice cream...how cool! And it really did taste like zucchini bread! Who would've thought that a bar would have such interesting flavors! The pecan tart and hot fudge was good as well. The plate was just a bit small...
And the beers were good! I'm not a beer drinker so I'm taking the word of others. hehe. It's a cool, chill place. The waitress was fast and attentive. It's a good place to hang out with your friends. :)
Plus the Cowboys won! Woot! And later that night the Rangers!! Go Dallas!! :P

Ketchup Burger Bar
Saturday night a group of us went to check out Ketchup Burger Bar. It's a pretty new burger joint that just opened in Uptown, by the same people that opened Farnatchi. Initially I suggested Elevation Burger, which is also on my list of places to try, but was persuaded to go here instead. hehe.
Ketchup Burger Bar
3028 N Hall, Ste 179
Dallas, TX 75204
(214) 922-8222
http://www.ketchupbar.com/
Price: $
Ketchup Bar offers a variety of specialty ketchups made in-house. Green Tomato, Spiced, Chipotle, House, etc... They also use local organic ingredients. They also have a full bar.
It's a pretty small place...a few tables in the front area with the bar and a small dining area in the back. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. If you want water/sodas, there's a self-serve area towards the back of the restaurant along with all the different types of condiments and silverware.
They offer a wide variety of fries. So we started off with 2 of the Fry Trio...which is a great deal!
Fry Trio (from left to right: Spicy Buffalo Fries, Onion Rings, Zucchini Fries) $6~
The zucchini fries were the ones I really wanted to try. They were sooo good! They were all hot and freshly fried. The zucchini inside was super tender and paired well with the crispy batter. The onion rings were good but kind of generic, I would've liked the rings to be thicker. The buffalo fries had a nice spicy kick to it, but were a little soggy from the sauce.
Fry Trio (from left to right: Sweet Potato Fries, Garlic Chive Fries, White Truffle Parmesan Fries) $6~
All of these were good. I loved the sweet potato fries. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and nice and sweet. :) I also liked the cut of the garlic and truffle fries...slightly thicker and fried perfectly. The Garlic Chive one kind of got lost among the other fries. I didn't taste much of the seasoning. The truffle fries were flavored with truffle oil, not actual truffles, but you still get the flavor. I liked these a lot too. If you can't decide from all the yummy options, definitely get the Fry Trio!
We tried out all the different ketchups with the fries.
The chipotle is pretty standard chipotle flavors. The spiced tasted like normal ketchup.. My favorite were the Green Tomato and House. The House had a bit of sweet and tang in it, almost like they mixed some dijon mustard in there? Dunno...but it was yummy. The Green Tomato was just different, and I liked that a lot! One of my friends said to me, " how can I ever go back to Heinz ketchup now?" hahaha. Agreed! :P
I got the The Blue Burger (Gorgonzola, pickled red onion, arugula, tomatoes, and our Mission Fig Spread on fresh baked Brioche) $9~
I liked it a lot! Dieting on the weekdays has me deprived of meat and this burger definitely hit the spot! haha. The fig spread was definitely interesting. It wasn't too sweet when I tasted it on its own, but paired with the rest of the burger, the sweetness came out more. I love the sweet/savory combo so this was great! The figs were sweet and fruity and the beef was juicy. The fresh arugula and tomatoes balanced out the meat and cheese. The brioche was amazing as well and really held up against the filling...didn't get super soggy. :) It wasn't really greasy either...so I didn't feel heavy at all eating it. The only think is I couldn't really taste the gorgonzola. I got a bit of creaminess of the cheese but was lacking the flavor. But overall, it was definitely what I wanted.
Other people ordered...
My bf got this. Wild Mushroom Burger (Sauteed mushrooms, aged swiss, arugula, tomato, roasted garlic aioli on fresh baked Kaiser) $9~
He loves the classic mushroom and swiss burgers so of course he had to get it. He liked it a lot. I got to try a bite. There were lots of mushrooms in there which is good.
Ketchup Burger (Tillamook Cheddar, red onions, lettuce, tomato, mustard and our signature House Ketchup on fresh backed Brioche) $8~
This looked really good. My friend said it tasted great and the bread was awesome.
The Roadhouse (Gruyere, Cherrywood smoked bacon, onion rings, garlic mayo and tomato on fresh baked Brioche) $9~
I almost got this.. I would've liked to have some greens on it though. But my friend said it was also really good.
They also offer several different kinds of milk shakes. One of my friends got the Creme Brulee Shake $5~
This was highly recommended by the guy at the register. It looked really good with the roasted marshmallow on top. It tasted good too. Rich and creamy just like a creme brulee. If only it could have the torched sugar on top!
Vanilla Bean Shake $5~
This was their other recommended shake. My sister got it. I liked the vanilla wafers garnished on top. It was a little melted/runny though. Her bf said he saw them leave it at the bar for a long time before they brought it out to her. That kind of sucked. But it tasted like a regular vanilla shake...nothing too special about it....
I was pretty full but I wanted to try their desserts. They were all $4...that's pretty cheap! I got the Mississippi Mud Pie $4~
When it came out, I was a little surprised. It was basically a chocolate ice cream pie. My expectations of a Mississippi Mud Pie is more like gooey, messy, maybe some mousse...kind of a like a 'dirt cup'...the ones with the gummy worms in it. The chocolate ice cream was good and the chocolate cookie crust was good, but it was just an ordinary ice cream pie... It looks like there's layers of something in it, but I couldn't taste the differences between the layers. It was a slight disappointment. :( Next time I'll try something different.
I'm really glad we went there, it was just what I needed and everything was delicious. The service is pretty non-existent aside from them bringing the food to you. Since we were newbies we didn't know we had to get everything else ourselves in the back. The waiters weren't too friendly when they told us to get it ourselves either... But the guy taking our orders at the register was really nice. I would definitely go back. It definitely gives Village Burger Bar (my favorite burger place in Dallas) a run for it's money. They should open a second location in Plano!!

H/G Weekend: Day 2: Lunch 2
We had to go to Galveston for a wedding. A friend of mine HIGHLY recommended we hit up Mosquito Cafe when we were down there. She said she HAS to go there whenever she goes to Galveston. So we went after lunch in Houston, for a second lunch. haha.
We weren't too hungry so we shared the Salmon Club Sandwich (Grilled fresh filet on toasted honey wheat bread with Hickory smoked peppered bacon, balsamic onions, Chipotle Mayonnaise and House Greens with choice of side: Potato Salad) $10.55~
We thought the price was kinda high for a sandwich, but after seeing it I understood why. It was a very impressive sandwich. I would say the salmon was at least 7-8 ounces, which most other restaurants don't even give you that much fish when you order salmon.
The salmon was an inch thick, covered with multiple slices of thick cut bacon. It looked SOOO good. The taste matched the look...it exceeded my expectations. Great flavor, lots of different textures, the fish was cooked nicely, and all the flavors worked perfectly together. I would have this all the time if I could.... And the potato salad was a great choice. It was pretty awesome. One of the best potato salads I've had. It also worked deliciously with the sandwich. Now I know why it came sooo highly recommended!! :)
I read reviews raving about their Zucchini Spice Cake (3 layered spice cake with cream cheese frosting) $4.50~ So of course I had to get it.
The portion was HUGE! Just like the sandwich. Triple layer cake with cream cheese icing. Super moist, you can see the zucchini, and awesome icing. Really great cake! :)
Quality of Food:
Price: $-$$ (for lunch)
The cafe was quite interesting, the exterior was not what we were expecting. Inside, you order at the counter and they call you to pick up your order.
