Emporium Pies in Bishop Arts

I went to check out the new Perot Natural History Museum on Saturday. Totally cool place btw... So I also took the opportunity to go to Bishop Arts in Oakcliff for dinner (since it was so close!) 

We had 2 hours to kill before dinner and were already hungry so we walked around the area looking for a snack. Dessert before dinner? Yes please!! :P

I've heard great things about this place and have been wanting to try it out for awhile. It's in a cute converted old home, very homey inside. It was pretty small, only about 6-7 small tables in there. And business was good! Constantly a stream of people coming in. 

They had a yummy display of pies by the register. They all looked so good! All their pies are homemade and seasonal with no preservatives, hydrogenated oils, dyes, or corn syrup. Let's just say it's "good for you". :P 

My friend got The Snowball (flaky crust filled with creamy coconut custard, house whipped cream, topped with crunchy toasted coconut) $5~ 

I'm not a fan of shredded coconut but he said it was really good. It did look pretty good. (minus all the coconut on top! :P haha.) I kid... 

I got the Buttermilk Blitzen (chai spice blend with classic buttermilk pie) $5~ Made it A la mode +$2~ 

I love buttermilk pies and they made it even better with the addition of the chai spice. It was spicy and warms you up. It was super moist and the crust was buttery and flaky. The ice cream was a necessary addition. haha. Who doesn't want a side of ice cream with all their desserts?! I really enjoyed it. I would definitely have it again. 

It's a cute place to hang out on a lazy afternoon or something. I only wish it was much closer to where I live!

H/G Weekend: Day 2: Lunch 2

We had to go to Galveston for a wedding. A friend of mine HIGHLY recommended we hit up Mosquito Cafe when we were down there. She said she HAS to go there whenever she goes to Galveston. So we went after lunch in Houston, for a second lunch. haha.

The cafe was quite interesting, the exterior was not what we were expecting. Inside, you order at the counter and they call you to pick up your order.

We weren't too hungry so we shared the Salmon Club Sandwich (Grilled fresh filet on toasted honey wheat bread with Hickory smoked peppered bacon, balsamic onions, Chipotle Mayonnaise and House Greens with choice of side: Potato Salad) $10.55~

We thought the price was kinda high for a sandwich, but after seeing it I understood why. It was a very impressive sandwich. I would say the salmon was at least 7-8 ounces, which most other restaurants don't even give you that much fish when you order salmon. The salmon was an inch thick, covered with multiple slices of thick cut bacon. It looked SOOO good. The taste matched the look...it exceeded my expectations. Great flavor, lots of different textures, the fish was cooked nicely, and all the flavors worked perfectly together. I would have this all the time if I could.... And the potato salad was a great choice. It was pretty awesome. One of the best potato salads I've had. It also worked deliciously with the sandwich. Now I know why it came sooo highly recommended!! :)

I read reviews raving about their Zucchini Spice Cake (3 layered spice cake with cream cheese frosting) $4.50~ So of course I had to get it.

The portion was HUGE! Just like the sandwich. Triple layer cake with cream cheese icing. Super moist, you can see the zucchini, and awesome icing. Really great cake! :)

I will completely agree with all the reviews I read. I would totally go back if I went back to Galveston and I highly recommend everyone to check it out!

Blue Plate Update!

Just a quick update on Blue Plate Kitchen! :) Went there again for their happy hour. Food was still amazing as well as the service. And the Cowboys won that day, so YAY!

I noticed that they changed up their dessert menu again so this time I tried the Spicy Chocolate Cake. $5~ It's basically like 2 cupcakes stacked on top of each other and its got a hint of spice in the cake. OMG! SUPER delicious! The cake was sooo moist, and the froston was awesome. This totally beats all the cupcakes I've had in Dallas so far. Chocolate lovers, you must order this whenever you see it on their menu! The hint was spice was just right. It made it interesting without being weird and it actually helped to cut the sweetness so it wasn't overly sweet. Also the nuts on top added a great crunchy texture to everything. I'm definitely going to get this again sometime! :D LUV LUV~
