Dallas Restaurant Week 2013: Steve Fields' Steak & Lobster Lounge

This past Saturday was my 2nd Restaurant Week outing. It was also a celebration for my dad's 60th birthday! I chose Steve Fields' Steakhouse in Plano because it's close to home and has great food.

Steve Fields' Steak & Lobster Lounge
5013 West Park Blvd
Plano, TX 75093
(972) 596-7100

Price (for RW): $$$$

Steve Fields' was one of my first ever RW experiences almost 10 years ago! I can't believe it's been a decade I've been participating in Restaurant Week. Definitely have had some great food over the years! hehe. I remember that Steve Fields' was very good. The portions were big, quality was top notch, and service was great. I hoped that 10 years later, it would still be the same!

We arrived for our reservation at 6:30PM. Most of the restaurant is already packed with people. We were seated in a smaller side room (which happened to be the room I was in 10 years ago!) haha. And it's a pretty big restaurant, so business is going strong! And considering that it's been around for almost half my life. It's definitely an establishment in West Plano.

We were greeted by our waitress who was super nice. She took our drink orders and gave us a rundown on the menu.

I had 3 Central Market 4th Course certificates so I went ahead and gave them to her at the beginning. For those of you new to RW, some restaurants offer a 4th course that you can either pay for or get for free with a Central Market Certificate. To get a certificate, you have to spend $25 at Central Market. But make sure the restaurant you are going to actually offers that before you go spending lots of $$ at Central Market! haha.
Each certificate got us Two U-12 Wild Caught Jumbo Shrimp (topped with spicy cocktail and remoulade sauce).
The shrimp were indeed jumbo!! Cooked perfectly with 2 different kinds of sauces. Both were good but I tend to prefer remoulad in general. My sister and bf loved the cocktail sauce. It was a nice intro into the meal.

We also got some Bread (rosemary foccacia??, with whipped butter and spicy oil) during our shrimp course.
Holy crap! They basically gave us an entire loaf of bread! haha. The bread was warm and soft in the middle, nice crust on the outside. The spicy oil had a nice kick to it without being overwhelming. Yummy. But I tried not to eat too much since it's only the beginning!

1st Course
Steve's Caesar Salad (romaine lettuce, croutons, Caesar dressing, anchovies).
My sister's bf got this. It was fresh and had actual anchovies on it, which makes me think that they made the Caesar dressing from scratch. Traditional Caesar dressing is not the same as the stuff out of a bottle.

Baby Spinach Salad (topped with toasted pecans, tangerines, onions, blue cheese crumbles, hot bacon dressing).
My mom got this. I liked it a lot. The spinach was fresh and tender. The bacon dressing added a lot of flavor but got a bit greasy towards the bottom. But all the different elements worked together really well.

Blue Crab & Roasted Corn Chowder (velvety stew of sweet crab, roasted corn and cream).
The rest of the table got this, which came highly recommended. I love chowder! This was definitely velvety and creamy. Very rich and luxurious. The small cup was plenty enough. I wish there was a bit more crab in it, but it was very good overall. Definitely filled me up a little.

Next are the Entrees, which were all served with roasted garlic Parmesan mashed potatoes and seasoned grilled asparagus.
"Center Cut" Filet Mignon (6 oz. Filet Mignon seasoned and broiled to perfection).
2 people ordered this. My mom's turned out to be more rare than med rare which she was a little afraid to eat. But the rest of us thought it was perfect. It was super tender. The crust was nicely seasoned and seared. Very good steak. We all thought she lucked out that it was more rare. hahaha.

Pan Seared Sea Bass (fish filet topped with crab meat and bearnaise sauce).
I opted for the fish since no one else was getting seafood. The fish had a nice seared crust on it and had good flavor even without the bearnaise sauce. But the sauce and crab on top were a nice touch. It was slightly greasy towards the end though. The mashed potatos and asparagus were pretty standard. The asparagus still held some of its crispness which I liked. It was a good dish, but definitely the weakest choice of the bunch.

Roasted Prime Rib of Beef (hand carved and served with Au jus and creamy horseradish sauce).
I wanted to get this but since half the party was gonna order it, I changed mine to the fish. The prime rib was delicious. Super tender with just the right amount of fat (in my opinion). It had great flavor on its own. I rarely use the au jus or horseradish on prime rib. It is my favorite cut of steak and my first choice at any steakhouse. Steve Fields' did not disappoint.

It was a lot of food, but pretty much everyone cleaned their plates.

Then it's time for Dessert!
Carrot Cake (topped with candied pecans).
Half the group got this including my dad. I had told the waitress at the beginning of the meal that it was his birthday and if they could put a candle on his cake for him. They did... and they even gave him a Happy Birthday card! He was surprised and very happy. :)
The carrot cake was a good sized piece. And normally I don't like carrot cakes because I don't like carrots (and sometimes they have shredded coconut, which I don't like either. haha). This one had BOTH, but I didn't mind either of them. The cake was moist and it had just enough cream cheese frosting in the middle and on top. The frosting and candied pecans paired really well with the cake.

Key Lime Pie (with graham cracker crust).
The rest of us got this, including me. It was SUPER tart. We all made a pucker face as we ate it. haha. Even my mom, who likes sour things said it was a bit too much. I did like the raspberry sauce on the bottom and the graham cracker crust though. The pie consistency was also very good. I guess we just got a batch of super sour limes! XP

Aside from the puckering pie, haha, we had a great meal. My dad really enjoyed his birthday celebration. Everyone loved the food. Our waitress was great, very attentive without being overbearing. The courses were all served at a timely manner. Success!! :D

By the middle of our meal, the entire restaurant had filled up too. And when we left, there were a bunch of people waiting for tables in the lobby. Wow... business sure is good! And I'm happy to see that. I think Steve Fields' will be around for a really long time. :)

LA!! Chego

For dinner the first night, I wanted to go check out Chego. It's owned by the same people that run the Kogi food trucks. Which are my favorite food trucks so far!! The menu at Chego sounded sooo interesting and delicious!

Chego
3300 Overland Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90034
(310) 287-0337
http://eatchego.com/
Price: $

This is a tiny place and it was packed when we arrived!! The line was out the door!! There are only like 3 long community tables inside and a few small tables outside the restaurant. You order at the counter and find your own space to sit.

We weren't super hungry so we were ok with the wait. The line moved fairly fast. A lot of people ended up taking things to go and the people dining were pretty fast about moving things along.

We got a few things to share.
3PM Meatballs (Korean-fried, shaved green onions, sesame, blueberry habanero salsa, polenta patty) $4~
I've had their blueberry habanero salsa before on the quesadillas at the Kogi truck. It was pretty amazing. So this sounded interesting as well. You get 3 meatballs on top of polenta. It was slightly sweet and tart and had huge flavors. The meatballs were really juicy. I didn't care for the polenta being completely soaked in the sauce though.

One Chubby Pork Belly (kochujang-lacquered kurobuta, with fried egg, pickled watermelon radishes, water spinach, cilantro, cotija, peanuts, over rice) $8~
Who can say no to pork belly!?! This dish looked amazing and tasted even better!! OMG! I can eat this everyday! I loved all the different flavors and textures. Lots of veggies, tart from the pickled radishes, a hint of spice from the kochujang, the crunch from the peanuts. YUM! And the pork belly was fatty and tasty. I loved loved loved it! No complaints whatsoever!

Tiny's Prime Rib Rice Plate (chili-rubbed, with fried egg, water spinach, creamed horseradish, roasted garlic serrano paste, fried shallots, over rice) $9~
This was also really good. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and had so much flavor. I liked how they put a lot of veggies in their dishes. Tons of bold flavors as well. The only thing I didn't like was the horseradish. I'm not a huge fan and I think they put too much. But one of my friends loved horseradish so he liked the sauce a lot.

Tres Leches Cake (devil's food cake soaked in cayenne-cinnamon-infused leches, tapioca milk pudding, spiced peanut brittle) $4~
Even their desserts sounded interesting. I like anything spicy...even desserts. And I love the whole sweet and savory combination. This wasn't really a tres leches in my opinion but it was delicious. The best part was the milk pudding part of the cake. It was almost like a really soft bread pudding/mousse. The brittle added a nice crunch on top of the super moist cake.

Sriracha Candy Bar (chocolate crisped rice bottom, caramel, Sriracha ganache, spiced candied peanuts, dark chocolate) $4~
This was the dessert I wanted to try last time at the truck but they didn't have it. When we unwrapped the foil, we were like "that's it?" haha. It was $4 and didn't look appealing at all... But...it was pretty tasty! It was basically like a crunch candy bar. I liked the candied peanuts layered inside.
I couldn't taste the sriracha though. I ended up squirting some actual srirach and dipping the candy bar in there. And it was REALLY good! The sriracha basically added the salt and heat to contrast the sweet chocolate.

I think this was one of my favorite meals of the entire trip. This is one of those places that makes me wish I lived in LA. I'm STILL dreaming about that pork belly bowl. Droooool.....

Into the Glass

I was going to the airport to pick up my bf last Friday night so I met up with some friends for dinner beforehand. My friend suggested Into the Glass in Grapevine. I never go to Grapevine so it'll be a nice change of scenery. Plus their menu looked really tasty. :)

Into the Glass
322 South Main Street
Grapevine, TX 76051
(817) 442-1969
http://www.intotheglass.com

Price: $$-$$$

It's a wine bar and the place is really small...only 35 seats so they don't take reservations. We had a fairly big group so we tried to get there a little earlier. And we got lucky! Arrived right before 7pm and 2 tables were just leaving. Yay!

The waiter came by to take our drink orders...some of my friends ordered wine. And he told us about the specials.

Everything sounded yummy but the specials sounded especially delicious.

I got one of the specials. Pork Chops (bone-in chops, peach sauce, potatoes, asparagus) $15~ It comes with 2 bone-in pork chops. It was yummy! The pork chops were cooked nicely and had a nice amount of fat around the sides. The sweet peach sauce paired with the pork really nicely. The veggies on the side were also cooked well and tasty. For the portion and quality, it was a great deal!

The other special of the night was a prime rib. 2 of my friends ordered the last 2 left. Prime Rib (topped with fried egg and crispy potatoes and sauteed mushrooms) $25~ I think it was a 16oz steak. It looked sooooo good! It was super tender and had so much flavor. Delicious! The egg on top had a runny yolk and was definitely the cherry on top. The mushrooms were awesome and the crispy potatoes added a nice crunch. It was a really good steak!

One of my friends ordered the Chicken & Waffles (rosemary, chipotle syrup, dark meat) $18~ I saw this on their website and I wanted to order this initially. The online reviews raved about this. It looked really good when they brought it out. I only had a bite and I remembered liking it, but I really don't remember what it tasted like. haha. There were too many other even better dishes... I did think the waffles were too thin though.

She also got a side of the Truffled Mac & Cheese. It came in a cute little cast iron container. The truffle flavor was very bold. I liked it. Rich and creamy.

My other friend got the Brie & Chicken Nachos (cilantro, tomato, sweet peppers, cranberry salsa) $14~ This was also another dish that reviews raved about. There were a few bad reviews on this though. It was interesting. The combination of the melted brie, chicken and dried cranberries were pretty good. But the brie is too mild so you only get the texture of the melted cheese but not really much of the flavor. The chips were pretty generic. It wasn't really a 'salsa' either..more like craisins sprinkled on top. It shouldn't have been more than $8 in my opinion.

Lastly, another friend ordered the Duck Confit Napolean (sweet potato, cilantro, blackberry) $14~ This sounded really interesting on the menu. It was a small plate but very satisfying. I would say other than the prime rib, this was my other favorite dish of the night. The duck was tender and it was great with the crispy sweet potato. The blackberry sauce added a nice sweetness and tang to round out the dish. YUMM!

The waiters were pretty nice and cool but the service was quite slow. I'm not sure why since the place was so small, but it took forever after we finished dinner to have anyone come clear the plates. We had to actually flag them down to order dessert...

All the desserts sounded good and the waiter highly recommended the Kahlua Cake and Bread Pudding.

We decided on the Kahlua Cake $7~ It was like a slice of a bundt cake. It was super good. I liked it a lot. It was really moist and I can definitely taste the kahlua. It wasn't too sweet and light. The whipped cream and berries were a nice compliment.

We also got the Root Beer Float Cake $7~ It just sounded so interesting. It was pretty good. Also super moist and light. I didn't get much of the root beer float flavor though. It seemed more like a cinnamon or spice cake.

The food was overall was pretty fantastic. I would totally go back to try other stuff. The service was a little too slow and it was super hot in there but the feel of the place was pretty cool. It doesn't feel like you are in Dallas anymore. I definitely recommend checking them out. But go earlier and make sure you are not in a rush. :p

Food Tour 2010 - Part II (LA)

Day 2 in LA. :)

BLD
7450 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90036
(323) 930-9744
http://www.bldrestaurant.com/

Price: $$

We started with Saturday brunch at BLD in Hollywood. They were also featured on Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate" with their Ricotta Blueberry Pancakes. YUM! That totally peaked my interest and I put it on the eating
schedule! hehe.

Just a fyi, they only take reservations for parties of 5 or more. And for brunch, it's probably a good idea to make a reservation. The place was pretty packed when we got there for our 12:30 reservation. Its a cute place. Open and bright. The weather was AMAZING so we chose to sit outside.

Our waiter was really cool... friendly and attentive enough to where he wasn't disruptive.

I scanned the menu over and over again, even though I had already decided early on to get the pancakes. I made some suggestions to my friends though...hehe :P

Here's what we got:
Ricotta Blueberry Pancakes (berkshire maple syrup) $13~

The pancakes were pretty big and full of blueberries. So pretty! And it came with a cute little log cabin container of maple syrup. I've heard that Berkshire maple syrup is one of the best? I'm not an expert, but I do know its 100% pure maple syrup. The pancakes were awesome! Super light and fluffy and lots of blueberries. Every once in a while you'll get a pocket of ricotta. :) And the syrup wasn't too sweet, which I liked. I shared about 1/4 of it and basically devoured the rest. haha.

My bf got the House Made Turkey Sausage Frittata (oven dried tomato, arugula, feta cheese, wheat bread and substituted salad for potatoes) $13~ It was a HUGE plate. I suggested he substitute the home fries for the salad which was a good idea. The salad made the dish lighter and it was really fresh and yummy. The frittata had tons of stuff in it but was still not too heavy. If you are hungry, this'll definitely fill you up!

One of my friends ordered the Fried Egg Sandwich (toasted sourdough bread, nueske's thick cut bacon, gruyere cheese, aioli, spanish chorizo home fries) $13~ This was another item that's been raved about on reviews. It was pretty good. So simple, yet delicious. The bacon was definitely nice and thick, lots of flavor. The egg was cooked nicely with a runny yolk. It's definitely a sandwich you eat with your hands because the sourdough is too hard to cut thru. But careful of the yolk cuz it gets messy. A good messy. :P I personally would've like to see a different bread... like a brioche or something.. on the sandwich (since I'm not a fan of sourdough) but it was still a really good dish.

My other friend got the BLD House Beef Burger (apple chipotle ketchup, smoked cheddar cheese, wild arugula, caramelized onions, salad) $16~ The burger didn't look that big, but the patty was thick! The flavors were great. The meat was really tender and juicy. I really liked the sweetness from the apple chipotle ketchup. The bread was soft and buttery with a slight crisp on the edges. Pretty good burger if you ask me! hehe.

Overall a great brunch! I enjoyed every bit of it! The great weather, being with my friends, and awesome food! There's nothing better than just relaxing and enjoying a great meal with people you care about! :D

Since this was our only full day to explore we had to move on to our next destination...

Roscoe's House of Chicken & Waffles
5006 W Pico Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90019
(323) 934-4405
http://www.roscoeschickenandwaffles.com/

Price: $-$$

With chicken and waffles popping up all over the place in Dallas, I really wanted to try one of the original places that came up with the concept. The places in Dallas are usually more gourmet and they put their own twists on it, so it would be good to get an idea of the original.

We went right after brunch...OMG...more food! But there's no other time. So we just got one thing to share...

#18. Thigh and Waffle $6.90~

I was kind of surprised to see the prices on the menu...I thought i would be cheaper... The waffle was pretty thin but had a nice crisp to it. The chicken flavor was pretty good, but the skin wasn't what I expected. Not really super crispy... Personally, I think the chicken and waffles I've had in Dallas are better. The chicken at Buttons was definitely better than Roscoes. However, the Red Rooster Louisiana Hot Sauce MADE the dish!

Basically you take a piece of chicken (with some skin), a piece of waffle, and dip it in a hot sauce/syrup mixture. THAT'S the perfect bite! The tanginess and spiciness of the hot sauce with the sweet syrup and waffle and the salty chicken. YUMMERS! I think if I had the hot sauce, I can make my own chicken and waffles at home. hahaha. Get some Popeye's chicken and waffle batter. :P

For dinner we were initially going to another restaurant in Hollywood, but my friend suggested this little hole in the wall Japanese BBQ place. It sounded really cool so we changed our reservation.

Sei-Ko-En Japanese BBQ (Yakiniku)

1730 Sepulveda Blvd. Ste 14
Torrance, CA 90745
(310) 534-5578
Price: $-$$

This place is pretty tiny, but they do take reservation, so make sure you call ahead. Right when we opened the door, I had to take a step back because it was SOOO smokey in there! OMG!!! I almost didn't wanna go in there! haha...

We were seated in a booth with 2 grills in the middle of the table. The waitresses were all older Japanese women, didn't have the best English, but they were really nice. They brought us some complimentary Bean Sprouts. It was tasty!

We ordered a bunch of stuff!
Prime Rib $8.95~
This was delicious. Each order wasn't that big so we ordered 2 of these. Super tender, we left it on the grill a little longer so it would get a nice crusty char on it. YUM!!!

Pork $7.95~ The pork was pretty good. Nice and tender with good flavor. Although with all the other great dishes, this was a little less memorable.

Super Prime Tongue $13.50~ This was beef tongue. Don't be scared. It's basically like really tender/thinly sliced beef. Super tasty!

Ox Tongue, slightly salted with green onions $8.95~ We liked the beef tongue a lot so we decided to try the Ox tongue. I liked this even better than the beef tongue. Also thinly sliced and the green onion/salty marinade was super tasty. The green onions had light onion flavors that really made this good.

Minced Raw Beef (with Egg) $8.95~ My friends told us we had to try this and see for ourselves. They had hesitations the first time they had it since its raw marinated beef with a raw yolk. I hope its super good quality!! Yikes! So you mix up the yolk into the beef with a little squeeze of lemon and dig in! It was really good! Didn't feel or taste like you were eating raw meat at all. The marinade wasn't overpowering but it definitely got rid of that raw meat flavor. The meat was super tender. If you are adventurous, definitely try this. You won't regret it!

Squid $7.95~ I love grilled squid but sometimes it can get chewy. Not this one! The texture was perfect! We ordered 2. :)

Beef Liver $7.95~
We decided to order liver. Some of us didn't really care for it and some liked it. I had forgotten I didn't like liver so I actually suggested ordering it. :( But after tasting it...I remembered I never liked the texture. Kinda dry...and tasted 'liver-y'. haha. Yea, you know what I mean. Not my favorite dish of the night.

Fresh Lettuce with Homemade Miso $5~
Just a bowl of fresh lettuce, cucumber, carrots, and a freaking awesome miso sauce. I put that sauce on EVERYTHING! I wrapped the grilled meats with the lettuce with a cucumber, some of the bean sprouts, and the miso sauce. PERFECTION!! :)

Fresh Lettuce with Sesame Oil Dressing $5~ This was more like a salad. Chopped lettuce with a very light dressing. It was nice and refreshing pairing with the heavy grilling. I liked it a lot!

What a great meal and awesome experience. Just make sure you don't have anywhere important to go after you go eat here cuz you smell pretty yucky after you walk out. Engulfed in all that smoke (which after a while you don't see it as much anymore.. haha)... Definitely give this place a try. It's awesome! :D
