RW 2012: Eddie V's

Restaurant Week is officially over. :( I ended mine with 15 of my friends at Eddie V's on Saturday. I've never been there before. I wanted to go last year but didn't get to, and from the great reviews, I was really kicking myself over it! But yay...they were offering scallops for their Central Market 4th course again. That was supposedly the best course last year AND again this year. I had my coupons ready to go!

Eddie V's

Price: $$$$

I really liked the decor of the restaurant. Modern and sophisticated yet still comfortable. The lighting was good too... not super dark. It was a fairly big place and it was completely packed! FYI. They offer complimentary valet, which is the best way to go since parking on Oak Lawn isn't the most ideal.

After the orders were taken we were given some bread to start. The bread was really good. Still steaming from the oven. It was crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside. Delicious! I would've liked the butter to be softer though. It was a little too hard to spread.

1st Course:
- Steamed Blue Hill Bay Mussels (Thai coconut curry broth).
This was the favorite of the night, most of the people at the table ordered this. And I've heard from previous diners that this was the best appetizer. It was yummy. The curry broth was really flavorful and the mussels were cooked well. It was also a really good portion as an appetizer. We also got more bread so you can sop up that wonderful broth.

- Sweet Corn Chowder (smoked bacon, potatoes, avocado, cilantro, red chile).
The rest of the group got the soup. There was also a salad option but I didn't see anyone get it. I got this as well because I LOVE corn chowder. This was fantastic. I just wished there was more! It was super creamy and chunky...full of potatoes, bacon and avocado. The avocado was an interesting addition and made it even more luxurious. And I loved the chile that gave it a really nice spicy kick. Dipping the bread in there was great as well.

Our main waiter was really good. He gave us time to look over the menus and visit with each other as well. As we looked through the menu he also offered his suggestions. He also gave additional information on the ingredients used in the dishes...such as the snow mushroom in the scallop dish. It's pretty common in Asian cuisine but I've never seen it used in any other cuisines. It was very interesting to see it here. He was great because he paid attention to the group and our conversations. At one point he joined in and gave a recommendation for another restaurant that he thought had the best shrimp and grits in town!

Next was the Central Market 4th Course:
- Togarashi-Seared Georges Bank Sea Scallop (snow mushroom and orange salad, daikon sprouts, citrus ponzu).
This is what I've been waiting for. Everyone has said this was the best course of the night. It was very good, although I think I'd pick the chowder again over this. The scallops had a great sear and cooked perfectly. The togarashi added a good kick. The sesame seeds were nice and nutty. I also liked the accompaniments to the scallops, the orange and sprouts and snow mushroom. Still very shocked to see snow mushrooms in a non- Asian dish. I have to say I didn't care for that as much. I feel like it was slightly overcooked so it wasn't as crunchy as it should be. But kudos to them for using it!

Main Course:
- Sauteed Georges Bank Haddock (in toasted Macadamia crust, Fuji apple, Meyer lemon and brown butter).
The entree choices seemed pretty even spread out between the group. I got to try some of each. I really liked the macadamia crust on the haddock. It was nicely browned and crispy. The fish itself seemed a little underseasoned and the plate overall was a bit greasy. The apples helped cut the grease a little but most of us weren't sure if the combination between the apple and fish really worked that well. Some of my friends moved the apple to the side and ate them separately. It also would've been nice to have some sort of side or vegetable on the plate with the fish.

- Garlic & Rosemary Roasted Chicken Breast (scallion crushed potatoes, pan roasted mushrooms and shallots, natural jus).
The waiter told us this dish is on the regular menu and said it's pretty good. I know that last year Eddie V's only offered seafood entrees. This year they decided to add some meat. Works out because I have some friends that don't like seafood! (Weird...I know...) But the chicken was cooked well. Very tender and juicy for breast meat. I liked the mushrooms on the mashed potatoes as well. A good dish, but nothing super interesting.

- Asian BBQ Atlantic Salmon (wasabi potatoes, baby bok choy, ginger vinaigrette).
This was my choice. The salmon was cooked perfectly. Soooo buttery and tender and I liked the sesame seeds on top. However, I didn't care for the sauce. It was a bit sweet for me. And you know I like sweet and savory... but wasn't a fan of this. The mashed potato had a hint of wasabi. I could taste it, but I wanted more kick. But this was more of a complete dish since it came with potatoes and veggies.

Dessert:
- Caramel Pecan Brownie (vanilla creme fraiche).
This was hands down the best dessert of the night. Even my friend who doesn't like nuts loved it. The pecans were finely chopped and almost had a toffee crunch to them. The brownie was rich and fudgey and just super decadent. The only complaint was the creme fraiche. It wasn't sweetened at all so that was a little strange. Would've been better to have a scoop of ice cream on top of that. But yea, overall, amazing brownie!

- Belgian White Chocolate & Michigan Cherry Bread Pudding.
I chose this. It was a really pretty dish. I really liked it because it was a dense bread pudding but wasn't too sweet at all. Almost more like a pound cake consistency. There were 2 sauces on the plate. Everyone liked the creamy one better. I think the red one was raspberry? It was slightly too tart for me.

- Mango & Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee (homemade cookie).
The size of the creme brulee was big! It was what I got in Paris, but it's rare to see such a big one in Dallas. I didn't try it because I'm allergic to mango. But my friends liked it.

Our main waiter was really great. But I didn't care for some of the assistant waiters. One guy particularly was really rough with everything...serving the dishes, clearing the table, etc. No finess. I also felt like the first half of the meal was a tad rushed. Like the time between the appetizer to fourth course to entree was extremely short. We had a good break between the entree and dessert though. And our waiter split our checks with no problems at all. He really made it easy for us for being such a large party.

Overall I had a good time. The meal was pretty great minus the entrees. I would go back again to try their regular menu. It's a cool spot to go with friends or take a date.

Morelli's Gelato in Zaguan Cafe

Morelli's has gelato shops in Dubai, Monaco, London and other exotic places and has decided to open their first US location in Dallas, TX. They feature their "soft" gelato in Zaguan Latin Cafe & Bakery.

Morelli's @ Zaguan
2604 Oak Lawn Avenue
Dallas, TX 75219
(214) 219-8393
http://morellisgelato.com/
Price (for gelato): $

I was super excited when I heard they were here. And the pictures on the website looked amazing!

We decided to go after dinner one night, for dessert of course, since we were in the area. I've eaten at Zaguan before and thought their food was pretty good. Here's a Beef & Cheese Arepa. Pretty tasty! :) Guess my bf was still hungry after dinner! haha.

We ordered a variety of gelato options.
Zaguan Special Sundae (vanilla and dulce de leche gelato topped with dulce de leche sauce, hazelnuts and coconut flakes) $6.49~
It was much smaller than we thought. I actually didn't know it was "soft" gelato until I read the menu just now so we were expecting something more like gelato. This was the consistency of frozen yogurt...maybe even lighter. I felt like it melted very quickly too...very watery. :( The dulce de leche flavor was definitely better since the vanilla tasted like nothing. It was extremely disappointing.

Medium Gelato (with strawberries and hot chocolate sauce) $3.99 + $0.99 (topping)~
This ended up being a much better deal than the pre-made sundaes. It was a little bigger and we actually didn't get charged for the extra toppings! But same complaint. The texture and consistency was definitely not gelato. And the waiter totally got our order wrong. We also got bananas and chocolate hazelnut sauce in it as well. Guess it worked in our favor.

Hot Crepes Gelato (filled with choice of dulce de leche or Nutella and served with a swirl of gelato) $4.99~
This was ok. The nutella is better. Crepes were good. Gelato eh.

Gelato Alfajor (dulce de leche gelato served sandwiched between Zaguan's alfajor cookies and dusted with powdered sugar) $2.49~
This was pretty small and totally didn't work. The cookie was too hard (more like a shortbread cookies) and the "gelato" was too soft. As soon as you bit into it, all the gelato squished out. :(

It was quite disappointing to say the least. I had such high hopes for this new gelato place. But it's definitely not gelato and they only have 2 flavors (vanilla and dulce de leche) and neither of them are very good. Sigh~ I wonder what their regular gelato is like??

Restaurant Week 2011 - The Place at Perry's

**Just a note for those of you unfamiliar with Dallas Restaurant Week. It happens every year around mid August and a bunch of restaurants around town participate. Some places extend their participation by another week or two. It completely ends by the beginning of September. It is sponsored by KRLD and Central Market. It is $35 at any participating restaurant for a 3 course meal (and some offer a special 4th course that you can get with a Central Market coupon). $7 of that gets donated to the North Texas Food Bank or the Lena Pope Home. You have to make reservations and they go fast! It is definitely MY kind of charity!! :P For more info visit: http://dfw.cbslocal.com/krld-restaurant-week**

Initially I had only planned 2 locations for Restaurant Week this year, but this past Friday we had an impromptu dinner and ended up at The Place at Perry's. We had a few choices but since it was super late notice I was only able to get a table for our party of 5 at 8:45PM. Everywhere else was completely booked. It's ok, I went to The Place at Perry's for RW like 5-6 years ago and I remembered the food was pretty great. I just hoped it was still good!

The Place at Perry's
2911 Routh Street
Dallas, TX 75201
(214) 871-9991
http://www.theplaceatperrys.com/

Price: $$$-$$$$+

Not to be confused with the more recently opened Perry's Steakhouse, The Place at Perry's is family owned and not a chain.

We arrived on time but waited for a few minutes before we were seated. The hostesses were very nice. The restaurant looked more casual than I remembered from the first visit. But I did like that it was brighter in the dining room than before.

We were given the regular menu as well as the Restaurant Week menu. I rarely do this, but I opted to order a la carte this time.. Gasp! haha. It was just a super late dinner and I knew I couldn't eat a full 3 course meal. Plus the item I wanted was cheaper on its own in the regular menu! haha.

We got some bread before the meal.
I think they were baked fresh in house. It was yum! The outside had a good crust and inside was pillowy and warm. Plus the butter was whipped!! :)

Here are the Restaurant Week menu items ordered by my friends:

1st Course --
Arugula and Fennel Salad (extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice) My bf ordered this and ended up not liking it because arugula tends to be quite bitter. So he traded with me. I liked the salad though. It wasn't too bitter for me and I really liked the contrast of the fennel with it. The fennel was crisp and was able to cut the bitterness of the arugula. Everything was fresh and the dressing was light. It was a very healthy salad.

Famous Blue Cheese Iceberg Wedge (sliced grape tomatoes, blue cheese dressing, crumbled bacon) I didn't get to try this but the presentation was very cute.

2nd Course --
Coffee Crusted Filet of Beef Tenderloin (5 oz. filet with a roasted blueberry chipotle sauce and green beans) My bf ordered this. The green beans were pretty normal so I'm just going to move on to the star of the plate, the steak! It was a tiny little piece but OMG it was delicious. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The coffee crust on the outside was seared nicely and the meat inside was sooo ridiculously tender it was like almost like eating ahi tuna! I liked the blueberry chipotel sauce as well. Who would've thought coffee and beef and blueberries? And it wasn't too sweet...it was a great flavor combination.

Marinated Pork Tenderloin (with sauteed lentils, quinoa, garlic spinach and carrots) Some other friends ordered this. The pork was fantastic. Cooked perfectly... tender, juicy, flavorful. The lentils underneath were ok. The flavors were nice but I thought they were a little grainy?

3rd Course --
Chocolate Fudge Cake. This was a pretty large piece of cake. It was super rich and chocolately. YUM! I wished it had a scoop of ice cream on the side though. haha. I shared with my bf so we killed it. other friends weren't able to finish because it was quite rich. But all said it was really good.

Crispy Banana Rolls (fried banana, sea salt caramel, vanilla ice cream). This was pretty typical fried bananas. It was good, but nothing uber special.

Now to what I ordered...
Caesar Salad (baby romaine, Caesar dressing, shaved Parmesan and homemade croutons) $9~ This was really fresh and I told them to go easy on the dressing so it was perfectly dressed in my opinion. My bf ended up eating most of it though, since we switched. hehe.

BBQ Shrimp with Homestead Gristmill Corn Grits (Gulf shrimp sauteed in homemade Creole BBQ butter) $16~ This was amazing. For an appetizer this was a pretty huge portion! There were 5 large prawns on top of the grits. The shrimp were plump and cooked perfectly and had super bold flavors. It had a nice kick of heat and paired with the creamy grits it was awesome. The grits were good as well. I liked the chunks of corn kernels in there too. I'd say this is probably one of the best shrimp and grits I've had ever!

So the food was fantastic, just like the first time I was there. The entree portions were quite a bit smaller than the first time though. The service? That's another story... Our waiter started out ok. Things were a little slow. He wasn't super attentive and it kinda went downhill after the entrees. Basically after he cleared the entree plates we never saw him again... Another waiter served the desserts. We were never asked if we wanted coffee or tea with dessert. I actually wanted some hot tea but kinda gave up since I didn't see him around. He wasn't rude by any means but just didn't seem like we were that important. Too bad, otherwise this would've been an exceptional dinner.

Meddlesome Moth

This past weekend I went to Meddlesome Moth for a friend's birthday dinner. I had never been there before and it was not what I had expected at all. First of all, I had the perception that it was more of a bar/restaurant than a restaurant with a bar. It was also wayyy bigger than I thought. The place looked pretty cool! I'm glad I had decided to put on a dress instead of wearing shorts. haha.

Meddlesome Moth

1621 Oak Lawn Avenue
Dallas, TX 75207

Price: $$

We had a really large group of 22. It took a while before enough people showed up for us to be seated. Then it took forever for us to get the food because the waiters were waiting for everyone to show up. Little did we know...a few people didn't show up until over an hour later... OMG. Seriously?? :( Sooo hungry!!

We started off with drink orders. They had a wide variety of beers and you can order beer flights to taste various ones. Several people ordered the beer flights. My sister's bf got the Flights of the Moth: Texas Edition $13? I really liked the presentation.

So with a party that big, they had required us to pick 4-5 of their shared plates to share among the group. Basically they would bring out a couple of each of those selections across the table. Finally after over an hour the food starts coming out!!

The pre-set selections were:

Tofu Tataki (soy caramel, nori, and seven spice) $8~ This was really good but definitely not enough. The tofu had great texture and the spices on top were wonderful. The onions on the side were definitely more than just a garnish. Together the flavors really worked. We were all starving though...we were really worried that there wasn't going to be enough food!

Five Spice Pork Belly (pickled carrot and blackstrap glace) $9.50~ This was one of the dishes I was really excited to try...until they brought it out. It's NOT pork belly. It's more like pulled pork or something...on top of a mini pancake of some sort. The pancake wasn't strong enough to handle the pork and its juices. The flavor was ok, not spectacular. And the portion was so tiny. Meh...

During this time we decided to order some additional dishes since there didn't seem to be enough food. I'll mention those later in the post..

Next came the Risotto (fresh peas, asparagus, and preserved lemon) $10~ Originally when my friend made the orders, the online menu showed Butternut Squash Risotto which sounded so much better. But they had just changed to their Spring menu, so this is what we got. It looked pretty good, clean, fresh...but still the portion was pretty small. The rice turned out to be quite undercooked and it was very bland. Tasted like watered down veggies with hard rice. :( Booo...

So far it's not going that great..until this came out! Shrimp & Grits (with jalapeno gravy) $16~ OMG this was by far my favorite dish of the night. The shrimp was plump and cooked perfectly. The grits were fantastic especially with that gravy. YUM!!! Only thing is it's a little small for the price in my opinion. I would order this just for myself if I go back in the future. It's definitely not big enough to share! haha.

The last of the pre-set orders was the "Bangers and Mash" (Buffalo sausage over whipped parsnips $12.50~ This was also wonderful. I guess they were good about ending on a good note! The sausages were super flavorful but I actually thought the parsnips and the sauce were the stars! The whipped parsnips were so creamy and smooth. Paired with the sauce, which had some onions, beans, and chorizo...it was awesome!

We ordered the following in addition to share:

Prince Edward Island Mussels - Diablo (dried basil and oregano with red chile) $12~ I was very surprised with the portion of this dish. It was actually quite large! Perfect for sharing. I'm not a big mussel fan but this was delicious. The mussels were cooked well and the best thing was the broth. Just dipping the bread in the broth was delicious! We even asked for more bread so the broth didn't go to waste. haha.

Beef Bone Marrow (salsa verde with crispy capers) $9~ I wanted to order this from looking at the menu online. I've never been a fan of marrow...but usually that's eating in a Chinese dingin setting. I know my dad loves it! haha. But I thought it was interesting that they had it on their menu and I really wanted to see how they prepared it. As far as portions go...it was tiny. Basically only 1 piece of bone (because it was cut in half). Not really worth it. The presentation was cool though. There wasn't much marrow inside the bones... It had a consistency like fat, that was kind of a turn off. First I tried it on its own...it was like eating fat. Ew. But then I spread it on the bread and it was much much better. The flavors were good but I wasn't a fan of the texture overall. But at least I can say I got to try it...

There were some hits and misses, but overall I think the hits were fantastic so I'm more willing to look past the bad dishes. I'm willing to go back and try some other stuff in the future. The service overall was fine, but I kinda felt like our waiters had an attitude about them. Not in a good way. They didn't obviously give us any attitude, but just from the way they spoke to us and served the meal, it didn't give me warm, fuzzy feelings...

I think I will go back at some point, I'm not really in a hurry though.
