It's the last day of 2017!! Hope your year was as sweet as mine. Here's my "Top 10 Sweet Bites" for the year. It was pretty hard to narrow it down. Y'all know I lurrrv my desserts.
These are not ranked btw... I love them all. But I've definitely have some more than others. And SERIOUSLY craving some right now...
- Starbucks Reserve (Legacy West).
This place has made me like coffee. Even if the coffee is topped with a scoop of ice cream. haha. :P The House Affogato from Starbucks Reserve is delicious. And I'm obsessed with this place. I love sitting at the bar so I can watch the baristas demo the siphon coffee. One of these days I'll have to go to one of their workshops! Also fantastic... the Cold Brew Malt... basically a coffee milkshake - Cold Brew, 2 scoops of ice cream, Starbucks' malt powder.
- Bisous Bisous Patisserie (West Village).
I've definitely spent a lot of time in West Village this year. Between Pok and the Summer Sammie pop ups from Bisous Bisous, it's like I lived there. I went almost every weekend they were available. Warm and flaky croissant waffles made to order with seasonal ice cream flavors sandwiched in the middle. So yummy!
- Val's Cheesecakes (Maple Ave, Lower Greenville).
Best cheesecakes ever. I definitely ate A LOT of his cheesecakes this year, include TWO whole ones. They make a great addition to any special occasion and he can do anything you want in his custom creations. My all time favorite... the Classic Blueberry. I still have a few jars in my fridge, better go get those now!
- Everett & Elaine (Legacy Food Hall & Dallas Farmers Market)
I first stumbled upon E&E earlier this year at the Dallas Farmers Market. They makes some of the most delicious looking desserts and pastries. But since they've opened their stall inside the Legacy Food Hall, I've discovered my favorite thing there. The Tiramisu Cotton Cheesecake. It's an Asian style (super fluffy) cheesecake with a decadent tiramisu topping. It's on a whole different level. You cannot compare it with anything else. Every single person that I've recommended it to has loved it.

- Commissary (Downtown).
Again, one of my favorite places this year. They have a gorgeous dessert display and so far everything I've tried is good. However, the first thing I had there, the Triple Chocolate Eclair, remains one of my favorites. It's like a Ferrero Rocher, which is one of my favorite candies. Plus it's fancy.
- North Italia (Legacy West).
Again, one of my favorite spots this year. Make sure you make room for dessert after all those amazing pastas. Their Tiramisu is probably one of the best I've had to date. Rich espresso flavor and cream, lots of chocolates, and the crunchy chocolate balls totally makes it.
- Tommy Bahama (Legacy West).
I didn't even know TB had restaurants until I went to the Legacy West grand opening. The decor is so festive and the food is quite fantastic. But... their desserts are definitely the star. One of the prettiest desserts I've had this year... and definitely the BEST creme brulee ever, imo. Their Pineapple Creme Brulee is baked inside an actual pineapple!! So bright and fun and fresh.
- District Food & Wine (Design District).
This is definitely a hidden gem. They're only open for lunch during the week so I don't think most people know it's there. But the BEST Lemon Cake of my life! I don't even really like lemon desserts very much and I chose this over the chocolate cake. What?? Not too tart or too sweet, the cake is fluffy and perfect. I still think about it from time to time.
- Emporium Pies (Bishop Arts District, Deep Ellum, Downtown McKinney).
This is my favorite pie place in Dallas so it's really hard to pick a single one that I love. But I found my absolute favorite pie this year... and that's a pretty bold statement coming from me. The Nutty Honey from the Fall Menu... peanut butter and honey. Please bring it back!!
- We the Birds Macarons.
So... these are not limited to 2017, but I've got to give a shout out to my friends at We the Birds for having the most beautiful and delicious macarons ever. I prefer theirs over Ladurée. Yes, you can quote me on that. I gifted several of their custom flavors to friends this year so I think it's relevant. :P Love y'all!
Sweet Dreams everyone! And have the most amazing 2018!

I love afternoon tea, high tea, any kind of tea + dessert type events where you can relax, eat, and hang out with your friends. :) I went to a few tea places while I was in Vietnam in August, so it was fresh on my mind. So me and another blogger friend of mine decided to take action and actually plan one. We were searching for some options of places to go when I came across someone's Instagram post on the tea at Bangkok on Beltline. Now this was already on my radar, but I had for some reason forgotten about it. They only have high tea on Saturdays from 2-4PM and it's by reservation only because they have to prep all the goodies. The date we had planned was a Saturday so this worked out perfectly. And to our luck, the PR company for Bangkok saw my comment to that post and reached out. Yay!
Bangkok on Beltline - Thai High Tea
100 S Central Expy #108
Richardson, TX 75080
(469) 930-9755
http://www.bangkokatbeltline.com/
Price: $35 per person
Most of the group were already food bloggers so now we are being hosted! Woohoo!! All of us got half off the regular price. It was great, since we were initially planning this as just a casual outing with friends. Yay. Thank you so much for hosting us, Bangkok on Beltline and Red iD Agency!!
I had seen pictures, but it was even prettier in person. We arrived on Saturday and the table was decked out with three 3 tiered tea trays FILLED with beautiful and colorful creations. I think it took us a full 30 minutes to get all of our photos taken... haha. Food bloggers, amiright? :P
We then met the owner of the restaurant and he proceeded to explain all the different items and the progression of the tea service.
We started with the Bottom Tier and work our way up. It has all the savory items. It is also paired with a Chinese Green Tea. With unlimited refills. I think I had 4 cups of this. I drink a lot of tea.. haha. Especially when I'm eating sweets too. The tea is light and unsweetened. There are sugar cubes for those who wanted sweetness.
Pad Thai Croissant. What a creative combination! East meets West. I wished the pad thai was warm, but I think that's kind of hard to do since the tea trays have to be prepared before the party arrives. Also... we took forever taking pictures. haha. The pad thai had a sweetness to it which I wouldn't have liked if I was eating it for dinner, but since this is mainly pastries and desserts, it worked well with the buttery croissant.
Chicken Satay Sandwich. This was my favorite. It had really great flavor. Almost a curry flavor in there.
Yellow Curry Puffs (filled with potato). This was also really good. The crust was flaky, not dry. The potato had good flavor. I'm assuming this is a vegetarian friendly item.
Middle Tier:
This one is paired with Chrysanthemums Tea, one of my favorite teas of all time. When I go to dim sum, I ALWAYS have to order this. It's a flower, and you can definitely get the florally fragrance when you sip it. I lost count on how many cups I had of this one. haha.
This tier had most of the Asian influenced desserts.
Black Rice Pudding (with coconut milk, palm seed jelly on top). Reminded me of all those Asian desserts I grew up eating. I enjoyed the rice pudding texture and I love coconut milk. Can't say I've had palm seed jelly before though. Yay for trying new things!
Rice Crackers with Caramel Coconut Sauce. The rice crackers were Asian style... so there's basically no sweetness to it. Just the slight nuttiness from the rice. If you are expecting a rice crispies treat, this ain't it. You can spread some of the caramel sauce over the rice crackers. The sauce itself was quite interesting. It was almost more savory than sweet... reminded me a bit like peanut sauce in Vietnamese/Thai cuisine.
Sticky Rice (with Thai Coconut Custard). I still don't fully know what all is in this. But the sticky rice was inside a layer of pastry or something. I liked this a lot, especially the coconut custard.
Top Tier:
Unsweet Thai Tea was served with this tier. I was curious to try it because I've never had Thai tea without the condensed milk or sugar... I really liked it. It almost tasted sweet on its own without adding sugar. It went really well with this tier. Actually all of the teas were paired really well with their respective tiers. I was quite impressed!
Pistachio and Raspberry Macarons. Beautifully made macarons. The colors were so pretty with the Matcha Tiramisu. The textures of both macarons were both really good. I especially loved the pistachio's flavor.
Green Tea Tiramisu (with red bean). This was the favorite of the group. Not only was it beautiful, it was delicious. The matcha cream had a rich matcha taste. I was surprised to find a layer of red bean in there, which added an interesting texture. Again, this is where the Asian influences play into a typical dessert. Definitely one of the best desserts in the display. I wished I could've taken some home... but it was in a glass so I couldn't.
We also got some of their signature Flower Sesame Cookies. These are light and crispy and really cool looking!
We were all stuffed! Some people couldn't even finish all of the different items. A few of the girls came in and scoffed at the amount of food saying they were still gonna be hungry after. They ate their words. It was a lot. I would recommend eating a very light lunch or none at all before you go to high tea in general. You'd be surprised how much little sandwiches and cakes can fill you up! Plus you're drinking a ton of tea. Well, at least I was. I had to go to the bathroom twice!! haha. I think I drank well over 10 cups total.
We had SO MUCH FUN! It was a super unique experience with the Thai inspired flavors. I've definitely never had a tea experience like this before. For the price point, this is a great value in Dallas for high tea. Most other places I know are at least $50+ a person. I highly recommend you try this. Great for a girls' day out, or a bridal shower. I'd even do this for a birthday party! :)
Thanks again for hosting us!! :)

This past Saturday has been some pretty good
eatin'!
We started off with a lunch reception held
by 2 of my good friends. They recently got married
in Taiwan (Congrats!!) and wanted to do a small
reception for family and some friends that didn't
make it overseas for the wedding...
They chose Nicola's in Shops at Legacy. I've been
there a couple times and have always enjoyed it.
Nicola's Ristorante Italiano
5800 Legacy Dr
Plano, TX 75024
(972) 608-4455
http://www.nicolaslegacy.com
Our group had the upstairs area which overlooks
the main dining room below. It was nice and
bright, a very nice setting for a small gathering.
They had preselected the menu. We started with
appetizers then our choice of soup or salad and
entree, and concluding with dessert. Nice BIG
lunch! haha.
We had 2 dishes for appetizers...
Focaccia Siciliana (savory baked flat bread with
sun dried tomatoes, pine nuts, dice tomatoes and
basil).
The flat bread had good texture. It wasn't
too thin or crunchy, still had a slight doughiness
which I liked. It wasn't very heavy either since
it wasn't covered in cheese. We were all pretty
hungry and it went really fast! :P
Calamari Fritti (lightly floured calamari with
garlic aioli and tomato sauce).
I've had their
calamari before and I had forgotten how good it
was. The batter was great and the squid was cooked
perfectly. The texture was just right.
Next course...
Zuppa del Giorno (Chef's soup of the day -
butternut squash soup).
Now, I normally opt for
salad over soup, but as soon as I heard butternut
squash... OMG. Gotta have it! And I'm so glad I
got the soup because it was awesome! It was rich
and creamy and had chunks of the squash in there
instead of a fine puree (which obviously I liked!
hehe). I scraped that bowl clean! It was my
favorite course of the day.
Insalata Mista (mixed greens with tomatoes,
balsamic vinaigrette). Pretty good size for the
salad. Looked fresh...
All the entrees sounded good...
Cappellacci di Zucca (handmade pumpkin ravioli
finished in a marscarpone cream).
As soon as I saw
"pumpkin" I knew I had to get this. I love
pumpkin!! It was a very filling dish. I liked how
the raviolis were huge and filled full with
pumpkin! It's quite sweet since you have the
pumpkin and I think some nutmeg and cinnamon in
there. Love me some sweet and savory so it's
totally up my alley. The pasta was cooked al dente
too which is preferred. YUM!!
Salmone al Pistacchio (dijon and pistachio crusted
salmon with roasted brussels sprouts, carrots,
artichokes, pancetta and red bell pepper sauce).
Seeing "brussels sprouts" almost made me change my
mind from the ravioli to this. haha. So my bf got
it and I got to try it. Heck yea! It seemed like a
really healthy dish! The salmon was cooked well.
He totally loved it! So we both made the right
choices. The brussels sprouts wasn't roasted
enough... I like that char on the outside and it
didn't have it. All the flavors and elements
worked well together though. The pancetta was the
icing on the cake! I enjoyed the dish overall. But
I still liked my ravioli better. hehehe.
Orecchiette con Salsiccia ("little ears" pasta
with roasted Italian sausage, broccolini, garlic,
anchovies and pecorino cheese).
Initially they
brought out the wrong dish. It was orecchiette
pasta but in a tomato sauce and nothing else in
it... We all looked at it, confused and had the
waiter take it back. haha. The sausage and
broccolini was the main reason my friend ordered
it! When they finally brought out the correct
dish, it looked sooo much better. The pasta was
cooked well and flavors were yummy. Another
winner!
What was initially served...
On to the desserts...
Tiramisu (traditional lady finger cookies soaked
in espresso, layered with mascarpone, coffee
liqueur and cocoa).
This was my choice. It was
pretty good. Standard. The mascarpone was creamy
and rich. I wish the lady fingers could've been
more soaked though. My piece seems slightly dry.
But still good. I liked the fresh berries on the
side.
Cannolo Siciliano (classic Sicilian cannoli filled
with sweet ricotta cheese, honey, chocolate chips
and pistachios).
I'm not a fan of cannolis (if you
read my Boston review on them...) Too much cream
and usually too sweet for my taste. This was ok.
But I don't think I'd eat the whole thing. My bf
loved it BECAUSE it was sugary cream. hahaha.
Guess it all works out!
It was a great lunch. I got to see some good
friends I don't see often and eat some fabulous
food. Also, our waiter was really good. He noticed
little things and anticipated what we wanted. :)
Kudos to my friends for picking a great place. And
CONGRATS again to them on their wedding!!!

I had a big holiday get together with a
group of friends before the new year. We
try to get together once a quarter, but
with jobs and babies and life, it's
longgg over due! I chose Mi Piaci
because one of my friends mentioned to
me a few months ago that they had squid
ink pasta. Sold! I had to go try it.
hehe.
Mi Piaci
14854 Montfort Drive
Dallas, TX 75254

Price: $$$-$$$$
We had a party of 10 for Saturday night
around 7PM. We were immediately seated
and they put us in the private room with
a giant round table. Felt so grand...
definitely like a family holiday dinner
or something. hehe. At one point we even
closed the curtains so it was completely
closed off to the main dining area.
I was pretty hungry, so I attacked the
bread plate when they served it. I think
it was herbed Foccacia, garlic Foccacia
and bread sticks. The bread was awesome.
I loved the pillowy texture and lots of
flavor. I had to refrain myself from
eating it all. haha.
We got started with some appetizers and
salads.
One couple got the Calamari Fritti
(pan-fried with red chili sauce &
cilantro oil) $9~ (in the background...)
I got to try one. It
was awesome. The calamari was cooked
beautifully and each piece was huge. It
was like calamari steak fries. haha. The
sauce complimented it well.
I had the Insalata di Cesare (heart of
romaine salad with classic Caesar
dressing, garlic croutons, spiced
pumpkin seeds) $8~ My favorite part was
the pumpkin seeds, gave it that crunch
it needed. It was a good salad, nothing
fancy.
A few people got the House Salad. They
said it was really good.
Zuppa Aragosta (Adriatic style lobster
bisque topped with house made lobster
fritter) $9~ This looked really good. I
didn't get to taste it though. But those
who ordered it cleaned their bowls.
On to the entrees... They hand make all
their pastas and even have a window into
the kitchen where you can see the guy
making it. I thought that was pretty
cool.
Spaghettini Neri (house made black
spaghetti with butter poached blue crab
and chili butter) $24~
All the pastas
sounded great but I was here for this.
You can definitely tell the pasta was
handmade and had good texture. The
chunks of crab were big and cooked well.
I felt there was a bit too much pasta vs
sauce though, but wasn't a big deal
since I don't like too much sauce
anyways. I liked the sprinkle of bread
crumbs on top to add some texture. I
liked it but I still like the one at
Spoon better... It was a pretty big
portion too. I took half of it to go.
I also got a side of Broccolini Fritti
di Peperoncino (flash fried fresh
broccolini with red chili flake) $7~ I
think they prepared it another way
because it didn't seem flash fried nor
did it have chili flakes on it. Oh
well...still good veggies.
Fettuccine al Prosciutto (wide, flat
noodles in a light parmesan cream sauce
with prosciutto and peas) $18~
I was
able to have some of this. It's like a
alfredo/carbonara... super creamy and
decadent. I really liked it. The peas
were cooked perfectly and the sweetness
paired well with the salty prosciutto.
Not for those watching their waistlines
that's for sure. haha.
I didn't get to try anything else, but
it all looked yummy.
Penne All' Arrabiata (hand rolled quill
shaped pasta with spicy tomato sauce,
pancetta, vodka, basil and pecorino
cheese) $18~
Pesce Branzino (tamarind glazed Chilean
sea bass with lemon basil risotto,
radish sprout, with spicy sweet
portabella mushroom sauce) $30~
Maiale al Forno (spice-rubbed pork
tenderloin with parmesan polenta and
blackberry demi glace) $25~
Osso Bucco alla Milanese (braised veal
shank with traditional sweet pea and
saffron risotto) $38~
Funghi al Forno (oven roasted wild
Italian mushrooms) $9~
So our main waiter wasn't that great.
But the waiter that served our entrees
was super cool. haha. I mean the main guy wasn't rude or anything but after they cleared the entrees, the waiter came with the check. We were all chatting so no one realized that we weren't asked if we wanted any dessert or coffee, etc... at first. We thought it was weird so we called him back and said we at least wanted to see the dessert menu. I think he knew he made a mistake so when he brought the dessert menus he gave us some excuse saying he overheard some people talking about cake earlier and thought we had dessert already... Whatever. Even if we had cake earlier, that doesn't mean we don't want the option of getting more dessert!! Right?! There can never be too much dessert!
And we DID get dessert. I love how all
my friends love to eat. hehehe.
Gelati o Sorbetti (assortment of gelato
and sorbet made fresh daily) $6~
Torta di Limone (pistachio encrusted
lemon tart with fresh berries) $6~
Crema Italiana (maple-flavored custard
with fresh berries) $7~
I got Tiramisu (the Italian classic with
espresso and mascarpone) $7~ It was
pretty good. Nice and light since I was
already pretty full. But pretty
standard, not the best I've had.
Also, just FYI, they don't do split checks but
they can take multiple credit cards so I
took it upon myself to list out all the
totals for each card. Took a while,
but I'm used to it. But it would be nice
for restaurants to be able to do split
checks. Just my thought. Thanks. :P
It was a good time. The food was yummy and portions were pretty big. I probably wouldn't request the private table again though unless the group is bigger. It was hard to shout across the table. haha. I'd recommend this place for a special occasion.
