NYC 2013: Dominique Ansel Bakery

For my next stop, I wanted to check out the famous Cronut bakery. Also because it was within walking distance on such a lovely day. haha.

Now, I knew I wasn't gonna get a Cronut. They've definitely sold out by the time we arrived around 2pm. Oh wells. I still can't justify lining up at 5AM to get one pastry. haha. But everyone has said that his other stuff are good as well.

The place was pretty busy, as I expected. The cakes and pastries looked pretty good! The line moved pretty quickly so we didn't wait long at all. They've got a cute sitting area in the back that was open and bright. Nice day for sitting back and enjoying a cake!

We got the Gingerbread Pinecone (moist nutmeg cake, feulletine speckled spiced mousse, ginger cream) $6.25~
One, because I love spice cake AND chocolate. And two, it was just so pretty! It really looked like a pinecone! The chocolate pieces were thin and quite delicate actually. Very good quality chocolate. The cake inside was delicious. Fluffy, moist, and spicy! I especially liked the bottom layer of some sort of gingersnap crust. It added a necessary crunch factor to the moist cake. It didn't look big, but it turned out to be very filling. I'm glad we decided to share.

We later found out that he just released his autumn desserts so I was there just in time for his new menu. :)

I also got a Cannele de Bordeaux $3~ to go.

Usually spelled Caneles, it's a cake with a rich custardy interior enclosed by a thin caramelized shell. After looking up some info and recipe for this, I realize how difficult it is to make them. I guess that can justify the price... Cuz I thought $3 for this tiny thing was kind of ridiculous. But it was one of the signature items so I thought I'd try it. It was good, but I wouldn't pay $3 again for one. The inside was soft, but not custardy... It wasn't too sweet, which I liked but it just didn't wow me. At least now I can say I've had a caneles!

Too bad I won't get a chance to try the original Cronut on this trip. But we still had a yummy cake. Maybe in the future when the lines die down, I'll go visit again...
