V-Day Desserts @ The Second Floor

After dinner we went to get some desserts and drinks. I suggested going to The Second Floor at the Westin Hotel in the Galleria. I've been there once for happy hour but didn't have time to try their desserts. I've heard their desserts are good. It's a really cool looking place. Very contemporary and comfortable.

The Second Floor (@ Westin Hotel)
13340 Dallas Parkway
Dallas, TX 75240
(972) 450-2978
Price: $ (for dessert)

Usually it's not so busy but right before we got there, a massive group of people arrived. All of a sudden the place was packed! I guess it's the place to go after dinner for some drinks! We waited about 10-15 minutes before a table opened up in their bar/lounge area.

The service has always been quite slow there, but the waitresses are really friendly. We weren't in a hurry so we didn't mind. It took a while to get our waters and some menus.

We started off with a round of shots. Our waitress suggested it. She was really cool. Chatted with us and made suggestions and everything.

For desserts, we got...
Chocolate Turtle Bomb (caramel mousse, brownie, chocolate sauce) $9~ The brownie was really moist and not too heavy like some brownies get. It was dark chocolate so it wasn't too sweet either. The mousse was really good. The texture was rich and creamy and you get a hint of the salt in the caramel that contrasted with the chocolate. It paired well together with the brownie.

Trio of Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches (red velvet pistachio, chocolate cookie with peppermint ice cream, graham cracker-peanut butter) $9~ This was really cute, but much smaller than I expected. :( The red velvet with the pistachio was a good combo. The cookie was thin and crispy. I wish it was bigger. The chocolate cookie was more soft, kind of cake-like, and was good with the peppermint. My favorite was the peanut butter one because I loved the pb ice cream. It had a layer of marshmallow in it. The waitress described it as a pb s'mores sandwich. The pb ice cream was yummy. I didn't care for the graham cracker cookie that much though.

Vanilla Brandy Pot-au-Creme (pistachio baklava, orange gastrique) $9~ I didn't have a distinct favorite dessert, but I think this was the front runner. The presentation was very nice as well. The pot-au-creme is basically a custard. It was really refreshing with the citrus in it. The baklava was fantastic. Delicate and crispy and was really good with the creamy pot-au-creme. The custard was topped with like a lemon meringue or something. The sourness from the lemon added contrasting flavors and made it even more refreshing.

I ate wayyy more dessert than I had planned to... (I'm still on a 'diet' after the holidays.. haha.) It was just so yummy!! I will definitely be going back in the future. On Fridays from 4-7PM they have Happy Hour specials of half off appetizers and Saturday Happy Hour has half off desserts. YUM! And ask for Kelly as your waitress because she was great! :)

Thai-rrific

It's Valentine's Day! Since my bf left for another business trip, I went to dinner with some of my awesome single friends! :P

We decided to go check out Thai-rrific because I've heard great things about it, and also my friend is currently selling his cakes (see The Cakepad ) from there. Plus it's BYOB, which is always good for my friends. haha.

Thai-rrific
3068 Forest Lane #212
Dallas, TX 75234
(972) 241-2412
http://www.thaidallas.com/
Price: $$

It's a fairly small restaurant in a strip mall behind the IMAX theater on Forest and Webb Chapel. It's dimly lit with lots of Thai decor. It was busier than I had expected! Half of our party came super late, but the waitress never gave us any grief about it. If it had been more packed, I'm not so sure then...

We got a few appetizers. Egg Rolls (4 pork egg rolls with sweet sauce) $4~ They were fried nicely and the flavors were ok. But the inside was kinda mushy...I couldn't really tell what wat really in it...

Fresh Spring Rolls (2) (lettuce, carrots, green onions, noodles, and choice of protein: tofu) $3~ These were really light. I've never had spring rolls with tofu in it. I wished there was some meat for extra texture. But overall it was fine. The peanut sauce was a little runny but the
flavor was good with the spring roll.

I ordered the Pad Thai (thin rice noodles with egg and bean sprouts served with peanuts and green onion, with tofu/veggies) $9~ This is one of the staple dishes I have to try at a new Thai place. It came in a cute dish but the portions were quite a bit smaller than most other Thai restaurants. There were lots of veggies and tofu in there which I like. The noodles were a little overcooked so they were too soft. But I really liked the flavors. I got level 4 spicy (from 1-5, 5 being spiciest) and I got a little kick, but it wasn't as spicy as I expected. The tofu wasn't fried like most other restaurants either. I actually really liked it like that. The soft texture of the tofu with the crunch of the veggies. I enjoyed it a lot. I would order it again.

Other people got...

Pad Peawan (sweet & sour with white onion, zucchini, snow pea, carrot, pineapple, with beef; served with Jasmine rice) $9.50~ This looked really good. I had a small piece of beef. It was good, I think...I don't really remember. haha. My friend finished it all tho.

Pad Kee Mow (thick rice noodles with red/green bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, basil, with chicken) $9~

Pad See Ewe (thick rice noodles with egg, broccoli, carrot, snow pea, zucchini, with chicken/beef) $9~ The Pad Kee Mow and Pad See Ewe had wider rice noodles but it wasn't as wide as most other places. They all looked pretty good. My friends all said it was good but was similar to most other Thai places.

After dinner, we all got a complimentary Red Velvet Cupcakes (provided by The Cakepad) for Valentine's Day. That was a nice surprise at the end of the meal. The cupcake was very similar to his red velvet cake. The cream cheese wasn't too sweet which was good. The cake could be a little more moist though.

**Note: There's no corking fee for BYOB, but if you use their wine glasses, it's $1 charge per glass.**

The waitress was good and the food was good. But for the price, the portions were a little smaller than most other Thai restaurants. They have a killer lunch deal though, maybe I'll venture back in the future for lunch...

Dessert @ Cretia's

After brunch we walked around Bishop Arts District. It's such a cute little area. We ended up at Cretia's across the street from Hattie's.

Cretia's
500 N Bishop Avenue
Dallas, TX 75208
Price: $ (for bakery)

They had a side door with the bakery section that was open and we could see the bakery displays from where we were sitting in Hattie's. Looked like a great day to sit outside with some coffee/tea and desserts so we wanted to go check that out.

We were both pretty full so we got 1 thing to share. All the cakes/pies/cupcakes looked really yummy. But we took the waitress's recommendation on the Banana Cupcake (with banana filling) $4~ Their cupcakes were bigger than normal cupcakes. Still, I thought the price tag was on the high side. She said this was her favorite cupcake and it tasted like banana pudding. I love bananas so it wasn't hard to talk me into it. haha. At first I tried the frosting on its own and I didn't really like it. The texture was off... But eaten together with the cake it was really good. The cake was really moist and full of banana flavor. There was also this fluffy/creamy filling on the inside. Overall it was very light. It wasn't too sweet which is just what we wanted. It was a good cupcake! Not good enough to make the 40 minute drive to Oakcliff...but if I'm in that area again, I might go back. hehe.
