"All Night" Happy Hour @ Dragonfly

Dragonfly @ Hotel ZaZa
2332 Leonard Street
Dallas, TX 75201
(214) 550-9500
Price: $ (for happy hour)

Hotel Zaza recently started Thursdays "All Night" Happy Hour at the Dragonfly restaurant. It goes from 5PM til close with drinks and appetizer specials for $5 each. They also feature a live band from 8-10PM. You don't need to make a reservation or pay a cover charge. Also, if you dine at Dragonfly, the host/hostess at the restaurant can validate your valet ticket for you!

I went to Dragonfly 2 years ago for restaurant week and really enjoyed it. The food was pretty awesome and the decor is pretty cool. So when I found out about this, I was totally down for checking it out. I normally don't go downtown on the weeknights because it's such a long drive, but I made an exception this time. I also had night class so I wasn't able to get out of class until about 9PM. Geez! So late! haha...i'm such an old fart. :P

The happy hour is located in the lounge area. Since it's winter, they've put a tent up so it wasn't too cold. I think the lounge is usually open and there's a small pool area. It was totally packed! There were only a couple waitresses that were doing their best at getting around to everyone.

I was starving when I arrived so I immediately went for the menu. The happy hour menu selection is very small...only 4 different food items...and according to my friends that were already there...the portions aren't very big.

I ordered the Crispy Calamari Salad (Asian greens & sweet chile vinaigrette) (normally $13~).
It came in a chinese take out box and chopsticks. I thought that was too cute! And made it more convenient to eat since there really weren't any tables. I really liked this. The calamari was awesome. Not over breaded like most places, full of flavor, had a slight spiciness to it. And there was quite a bit of calamari. The salad was also really good, the dressing was sweet and complimented the salty/spicy calamari really well. I could probably eat this as a main dish.

I also got the Burger Sliders (horseradish pickle, red onion relish & smoked Gouda cheese) (normally $14~). The sliders were very good as well. The meat was cooked about medium rare, usually I like medium for burgers but med rare is fine with me as well. The meat had a lot of flavor, and was super juicy. The cheese and the pickles added more flavors to the burger and the buns had really great texture. I don't think I've been to a hh with bad sliders...its not something you can mess up easily.

Just a note about the original prices...I'm not sure if you get more when you pay the original food prices, but for $5 I thought the portions were ok. The food was fantastic once again. It wasn't too heavy or greasy so that was good. The venue was nice as well, just kinda loud since the band is playing so you can't really talk to people. But it's a cool little hotspot to check out on Thursday nights!

Dinner @ Otaru

Otaru
5100 Beltline Road Ste 796
Dallas, TX 75254
(972) 866-8278
www.otaruaddison.com
Price: $-$$

I recently found out about another sushi place in Addison that supposedly has really good happy hour specials. Otaru Japanese Restaurant and Lounge. According to their website they had drink specials all day every day, as well as Buy 1 Get 1 on certain sushi orders. Since Firefly was a dud...(a friend of mine went for lunch and said their sushi was warm...ew...) I hoped Otaru would be much better.

It is located behind TGI Fridays on Beltline and Tollway area. It's a little hidden so look for TGIF and you should be fine. Upon walking in, it's very dark, kind of bluish/lounge-y lighting. The place was empty except for a small group at the sushi bar. Yikes...I was a little worried. I basically chose to be seated at their large table in the back, where it had more lights and felt less dreary.

After some people started arriving, the waitress came around to get our drink orders. They were very nice, but one of them did not speak English well. The menu has a lot of selection and the prices are pretty decent for a sushi place. Since I saw on the website that they had sushi specials, I asked the waitress just to make sure. The first waitress told me they do not have food specials, only drinks. She seemed confused as I was asking her... I was like...what??? So then I asked the other waitress, and she said the same thing, but then went to go check with the sushi chef. She informed us that the sushi chef is going to let us do the Buy 1 sushi get 1 free deal. I was a little annoyed... It was good that they let us do the promotion, even though they are no longer doing it, but please Please PLEASE update your websites people!!! I hate it when places don't update their websites and gives people false hope when they go in. They also told my friends less drink specials than they have posted on their website. Sigh~

Off to a not so great start... So we all ordered our own thing. But I was able to sample quite a few.

I got the Otaru Salad (house salad with ginger dressing) $2.25~ I liked the salad a lot. The greens were crisp and fresh. The dressing was tasty and not over powering. And the bowl it came in was pretty cute.

I ordered the Salmon Sushi $3.95~ and Squid Sushi $3.75~(which were buy 1 get 1 free). Both were pretty good. Good texture and quite fresh. I liked how the salmon was a nice thick strip unlike some places that give you a tiny thin piece.

I also got 2 different rolls: Futo Maki Roll $4.50~ and Spicy California Roll (topped with Sriracha) $4.50~ The Futo Maki turned out to be Korean style rolls...which I am not a fan of. The ingredients inside the rolls were fake crab, egg, carrot, cucumber and avocado. The flavors were bland and just not very appetizing... But I really enjoyed the spicy California Roll. It was basically regular California Rolls with drops of Sriracha on it. The rolls themselves were great, but the sriracha added so much more flavor and that spicy kick. It was yummy! I think I'll ask for sriracha next time I order regular california rolls! hehe.

My sister got the Otaru Ramen (ramen noodle with green onion, nori, pepper, slices of Korean pepper and assortment of seafood) $7.95~ It was a pretty large bowl and smelled awesome. The noodles turned out to be the korean instant noodles that you can buy at the supermarket. If you've had Shin spicy noodles, you know what I'm talking about. Don't get me wrong tho, those noodles are awesome. I love the texture. The ramen was good! Spicy broth with lots of different seafood in it. We laughed about paying $8 for instant noodles but all agreed that they backed up the price with the additional ingredients.

Other people ordered an assortment of rolls:

Kamikaze Roll (spicy tuna roll topped with spicy tuna, avocado and spicy mayo) $10+~ This was really tasty! I love avocado and I love spicy. It was creamy and spicy and full of flavor. i would recommend this to avocado lovers.

White Dragon Roll (spicy tuna and shrimp tempura roll topped with rice noodle? and jalapeno) $10+~ This was also pretty good. We couldn't really figure out what the white layer on top is...texturally it felt like rice noodle. I liked Kamikaze better but this was good too!

Pink Lady Roll (crab and SMT wrapped with salmon topped with blueberry mayo) $9.50~ It was disappointing.. when they brought it we were like...That's it?!?!? There needs to be more food when it's almost $10. haha. My friend said it was good but definitely not worth the money.

King Kong Roll (seared beef, pineapple, and some kind of sauce) $10+~ I didn't get to try this but it looked really tasty, and my friend cleaned his plate!

We got a nice surprise at the end of dinner. They brought out 2 sizzling plates of Korean Cheese Corn on the house. I love corn! And sizzling cheese?!? YUM! I wish we had some rice or something to go with it but it was really good. A pleasant surprise. :)

All in all, it was a good dinner. Started out kinda rough, but the food was pretty good. The waitresses were nice but service was kind of lacking. Eh...I wasn't expecting much more to tell you the truth...haha... I guess the food and decent prices made up for the outdated website information and lack of service. I would probably go again to try more of their specialty rolls...and maybe a bento box.

NYE Pre-Party @ Farnatchi

Happy New Year Everyone!!! :)

For NYE, I celebrated it with some of my closest friends and had a fantastic time at dinner at Farnatchi Gourmet Oven (Knox and 75). Just a note **restaurant menu prices seemed to be a dollar more on every item than the online menu.**

Farnatchi
3001 Knox St # 108
Dallas, TX 75205-5592
(214) 219-7200
http://www.farnatchi.com/

Price: $$

I chose Farnatchi as our dinner destination for NYE for a couple of choices. 1.It is BYOB, great for pre-partying! 2.The food pictures on the website looked really tasty. 3.The prices were pretty decent (as opposed to the super expensive pri-fixe menus other restaurants were doing). 4.Everyone likes pizza and pasta!!

We had a group of 8 people so I was able to reserve their only large party table. The restaurant is fairly small and has a great ambiance. It's casual yet still upscale.

Since we were there to celebrate NYE we brought quite a bit of alcohol. The waiter and waitress were very quick to bring out ice buckets and cut limes for us. Everyone was super nice.

We planned on sharing a bunch of different things so I just ordered for the whole table.

We got a few House Salads (mix greens, creamy italian dressing) $5~ to start. The greens were very fresh, and the dressing was delicious. Full of flavor but not drowning the salad. I enjoyed it a lot!

We got 3 different types of pizzas (all medium sized). 3 Funghi Pizza (pomodoro, mozzarella, mushrooms, spinach, goat cheese) $15~ (added sliced tomatoes $2~).

Mediterranean Pizza (chicken, pesto, olive, mozzarella, feta) $14~ (added sundried tomatoes $2~). Farnatchi Pizza (sausage, pomodoro & mozzarella peppers, onions, olives) $14~ All the pizzas were very good. Even though its all thin crust, it was nice and crispy without being too dry or thin. All were full of flavor and had lots of toppings on each slice. My personal favorite was the Farnatchi Pizza, I think because of the sausage. But the 3 Funghi Pizza got the overall popular vote. That was my #2 simply because I'm not too fond of goat cheese, and there was quite a bit of it on the pizza. But I still ate everything because it was all so delicious.

We got 2 pastas: Spaghetti Meatballs $9~ and Linguini Casablanca (shrimp, calamari, baby scallops) $11~ The pastas were cooked pretty well. Almost al dente...still had a slight bite to it. The spaghetti with meatballs was good but nothing special. I wasn't that impressed with the marinara. The linguini, however, was very good. It had a nice spicy kick and had lots of different flavors. There was also a lot of seafood in there! If you like seafood, I would definitely recommend this dish.

We also got some complimentary bread. I think its some sort of garlic/pesto spread on top. The bread was delicious. It had the perfect crust and slightly soft on the inside, and paired perfectly with the sauces from the pastas.

Lastly we got the Polo e ?? (stuffed chicken breast with spinach, bell peppers, with side of pasta) $14??

I can't remember the full name of the dish or the price...it is not on their website menu. I think we could've done without this dish. It was good, but quite small. It was hard to share the chicken, the last piece had to be split among 4 of us...so some people didn't get any. I guess for 1 person it's a pretty good size. The flavors were good but with all the other goodies around, this got lost in everything else.

For dessert we order 2 of each: Tiramisu $6~, Pistachio Gelato $6~, and Hazelnut/Chocolate Filo $6?? The Hazelnut/chocolate filling was quite interesting, it was almost like Nutella, but not the same texture. I liked it a lot. The filo exterior added a nice crunch, but I felt there was too much filo and not enough filling. The pistachio ice cream was ok. I liked the bits of Pistachio sprinkled on top, added more texture and the fruits were a nice touch. But I couldn't really taste the pistachio in the ice cream after sampling the other desserts. The tiramisu was pretty awesome. Super moist/soft/creamy/chocolatey. Definitely worth trying! :)

The service there was wonderful. The staff was really accommodating and towards the end of the night even partied with us a little! :) It was a great start to a great night of fun and celebration. I would definitely recommend Farnatchi for a celebration or regular meal. If you like Italian and Mediterranean flavors and Pizza...then give this place a try! I will definitely be going back in the future.

Zoes Kitchen @ Snider Plaza

We had our last L2E lunch of the decade!! O.O We decided to go somewhere healthier since there's so much eating going on during the holidays.

Zoes Kitchen
6800 Snider Plaza
Dallas, TX 75205
(214) 987-1020
http://www.zoeskitchen.com/

Price: $

I had such a great experience at Zoes Kitchen in Plano, I suggested we go to the Dallas location in Snider Plaza...closer to my work. First thing I noticed walking in was that they had a smaller menu than the Plano location. I was actually looking forward to a particular item but they didn't have it. :( Oh wellz~

I ordered the Chicken Salad Sandwich (all white meat with lettuce, tomato, mayo on 7-grain) includes 1 side (potato salad) and chips $7.45~
The potato salad was pretty awesome. Lots of flavor and not heavy since it has no mayo. I could probably eat a tub of this...that would defeat the purpose of eating healthy tho. haha. The sandwich was very tasty and light, just what I wanted. It was also super filling.

K got the Greek Pita (chicken breast topped with lettuce, tomatoes, carmelized onions, feta cheese) includes 1 side (fresh fruit) and chips $7.45~ She said it was pretty good but she preferred the pita from Fadis, which is more authentic Mediterranean.

J ordered the Greek Chicken Marinara Plate (sauteed chicken breast topped with a Greek marinara sauce and lightly sprinkled parmesan cheese served over a bed of orzo pasta with Zoe's Greek salad) $8.95~ Sorry I didn't take a pic of this... :( The description sounded wayyy better than it actually was. When it came, everyone was like...this is it? It was just like red sauce over a plate of orzo. The chicken was hidden under the sauce...and the flavor was meh. The orzo was overcooked...too soft.

I enjoyed my dish, but I would probably not go back to this location. The Plano one had more selection and actually closer to my home. :)

Firefly's Weekend Happy Hour

Firefly
14905 Midway Road # 102
Addison, TX 75001
(972) 788-9210
Price: $ (for happy hour)

I recently discovered Firefly in Addison. I never even knew it existed! Apparently they have late night happy hour on the weekends (Friday and Saturday until 2AM)! I suggested it to some friends after dinner and we decided to check it out.

The happy hour is only limited to the bar and lounge area. The bar isn't very big and they had a DJ in the corner. It was pretty packed and super loud. We almost left because it was too loud until we found a table in the lounge.

We sat around for quite a while and tried to flag down a waiter. I thought he saw me at one point but never came over. We ended up going back to the bar to order some food and drinks. They were obviously short staffed and the bartenders seemed kinda annoyed. They had drink specials: $3 Crown and Down, but according to them Baileys is top shelf (so it didn't count)?? I have no idea...it seemed off. We went ahead and ordered California Roll $3.25~ and Calamari $4.50~ and then waited some more to get our drinks.
We went back to our table and waited a long while before the food came. My friend even had to go back to the bar to check on it. The food was ok...nothing I would rush back for. I did like the fact that they fried some green onion and jalapeno slices along with the calamari. It added extra flavor, not typical with calamari. Its good snacky stuff I guess. It's still an option for late weekend munchies if you're looking for more of a deal. Just don't be expecting any sort of service there...
